Manitoba Crown Lands Act Amendments Sideline Young Ranchers, say NFU
The amendments to the Crown Lands Act made through Bill 35, which bring in a highest bidder scenario, is clearly a government cash grab at the expense of young cattle ranchers and creates yet another barrier in the way of the next generation of Manitoba ranching families. The NFU calls for Bill 35 to be repealed and replaced with a new, clear and transparent point system that will help young ranch families become established. Read more

A Food Policy for Canada
The NFU brief presented to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food promotes the idea that a food policy for Canada could usher in a holistic view of food and agriculture that would transform Canada’s farming, food processing and distribution system into one that makes food sovereignty a reality if the government decides to start building a food system that benefits Canadian farmers and consumers instead of accelerating down its current path which has only concentrated the power and wealth of multinational corporations and diminished the democratic space for elected governments. Federal Budget – The NFU’s Recommendations
The Federal Budget will be tabled in Parliament on March 22, 2016. () presented its recommendations to the House of Commons Finance Committee during its pre-budget consultation process. The is calling for the budget to: Rebuild agriculture institutions through return to prior funding levels (at least) and by renewing their commitment to the public interest. Read more
New Farmers Need New Government
There isn’t much talk about agriculture and the farm succession crisis this election. The political calculation seems to be that agriculture is a rural issue and rural issues don’t matter because they don’t swing votes. The assumption being that urban voters, who make up the majority, don’t understand or don’t care much about agriculture. Read more
