NFU asks Ag Committee to make food sovereignty the foundation of National Food Policy
<strong<span class="nfu nfu-angle-double-right"</spanOttawa</strong<span class="nfu nfu-angle-double-right"</span—The federal government has mandated the Minister of Agriculture to “develop a food policy that promotes healthy living and safe food by putting more healthy, high-quality food, produced by Canadian ranchers and farmers, on the tables of families across the country.” On Thursday, October 5, National Farmers Union (NFU) Youth President, Ayla Fenton, will speak to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-food, asking them to make food sovereignty the foundation of Canada’s national food policy.
CETA the Wrong Deal for People, says National Farmers Union
<strong<span class="nfu nfu-angle-double-right"</spanSaskatoon</strong<span class="nfu nfu-angle-double-right"</span—Major portions of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) are coming into force today. “This is the wrong trade deal for Canadian and European citizens,” said Terry Boehm, Chair of the National Farmers Union (NFU) Seed and Trade Committee. “It is, however, very good for major corporations that have any sort of relationship to either Canada or Europe. Indeed, it is a bill of rights for corporations, allowing them to override governments all the way down to the municipal level.”

Despite repeated demands by civil society organizations in all three countries, the governments have refused to open the talks to the public or to publish proposed negotiating texts.
Farm Groups Call on Ag Minister to Cancel GM Alfalfa Registration
14 farm organizations repeated their joint call for the federal government to cancel variety registration for all genetically modified (GM or genetically engineered) alfalfa until a full economic impact assessment is conducted, and to establish a protocol for testing all imports of alfalfa seed grown in the US.
