Four BC Farms featured in Depth of Field: Films About Farming

British Columbia, Canada – British Columbia’s sustainable agriculture landscape is featured in the short documentary series Depth of Field: Films About Farming presented by the National Farmers Union and March Forth Creative. The series of short films tell the stories of 40 incredible farms across Canada, including four BC farms employing organic, ecological practices: Klippers Organic Acres, Spray Creek Ranch, Glorious Organics, and Grounded Acres Organic Farm.

“By visiting British Columbia around the summer solstice, we were able to see the season in full swing. The four farms captured — from the sunshine coast to the Similkameen Valley — each highlight unique strengths, challenges and opportunities for sustainable agriculture in Canada.” said filmmakers of Depth of Field Sarah Douglas and Tamer Soliman, March Forth Creative.

Klippers Organic Acres

Klippers Organic Acres began as a small 5-acre Certified Organic farm, created by co-founders Kevin and Annamarie Klippenstein. With a history in organic farming and the restaurant industry, they were eager to start their farm and directly produce the food that people eat. Over the years they worked towards having a positive impact on the community by offering apprenticeships on the farm and giving away Community Supported Agriculture shares (CSA’s) to single parent families and homes with at-risk kids. Today they are proud of the team they have built to ensure that Klippers Organic Acres is providing healthy produce to customers–on site, through Vancouver farmers markets, local restaurants, and have expanded the processing side of the business to eliminate the food waste at the farm level. Today they farm 65 acres with an onsite marketplace & cafe, an award winning restaurant, a cidery and guest suites

Spray Creek Ranch

Spray Creek Ranch is a certified organic and pasture-based farm producing meat and eggs on 260-acres in the rain shadow of BC’s Coast Mountains.

Glorious Organics

Glorious Organics Cooperative is a small-scale, cooperatively owned and operated, certified organic farm located on unceded Kwantlen traditional territory in Aldergrove, BC. They grow mixed vegetables for farmers markets, restaurants and a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, and they save seeds for sale through BC Eco Seed Co-op. They are known for their specialty salad blends and for being obsessed with growing, eating and talking about Radicchio. They love being farmers and aim to grow good food and support sustainable food systems in their province while doing it.

Grounded Acres Organic Farm

Grounded Acres is a queer-run farm growing certified organic mixed vegetables and fruit and raising certified organic laying hens for eggs on 2.5 acres of unceded ancestral Sḵwx̱wú7mesh territory on the Sunshine Coast of B.C. They sell to the farmers’ market, a box program, and at their farm stand and to wholesale clients. They use growing practices that regenerate and contribute to the health of our ecosystems and they hope to create safer spaces in agriculture for 2SLGBTQIA+ folks like themselves.

Stay tuned as we launch each short film over the coming months. Films will be released online and shown via local screenings by community members and other farm organizations during the winter of 2024.

Depth of Field: Films About Farming

Depth of Field is a series of 40 short documentaries produced and presented by the National Farmers Union and March Forth Creative. The films showcase Canadian farmers and farm workers, and their sustainable farming practices on and off the land. Rotational grazing, seed saving, building healthy soils, and working for social justice– different farmers highlight their own priorities and, together, these films tell the story of farming practices that would create the food system we all want. The National Farmers Union wants Canadian food consumers to learn more about the work of farming and the thoughtful commitment farmers in communities all across Canada , like the ones featured in Depth of Field, contributes to building a thriving food system that benefits people and the land.
