Two QC Farms featured in Depth of Field: Films About Farming

Quebec, Canada Two remarkable farms in Quebec, Tourne-Sol Cooperative Farm and Grazing Days Farm, are taking the spotlight for their contributions to sustainable and ecological farming. These farms are set to feature in Depth of Field: Films About Farming, a documentary series that celebrates Canadian farmers dedicated to sustainable, local and ecological practices that support local food sovereignty.

The filmmakers of Depth of Field, Sarah Douglas and Tamer Soliman, of March Forth Creative, share: “We hope these films showing different, successful models of farming pique the viewers’ interests to learn more about Quebec’s dynamic agriculture scene.”

Ferme Coopérative Tourne-Sol

Ferme Coopérative Tourne-Sol, located in Les Cèdres, Quebec, is a 15-acre ecological farm that produces certified organic vegetables and seeds. Founded in 2005 by 5 young farmers keen to make a living from sustainable agriculture, the cooperative now has 10 members and a total of 20 employees. Tourne-Sol seeds are sold online and in stores across eastern Canada. CSA vegetable baskets feed 700 families each season, connecting the community with local agriculture while contributing to building a resilient food system.

Ferme Grazing Days Farm

Ferme Grazing Days is a family-run farm in the community of St.-André-Avellin, Quebec. Owned and operated by Paul Slomp and Josée Cyr-Charlebois, they produce and sell grass-fed Angus beef, pastured pork, and pastured chicken by direct delivery in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

Both of these farms contribute to the promotion of sustainable farming and demonstrate how environmentally conscious practices can benefit the local community and the broader environment and they serve as examples of the types of farmers that eaters need to support to strengthen our local economy and food system.

Stay tuned as we launch each short film over the coming months. Films will be released online and shown via local screenings by community members and other farm organizations during the winter of 2024.

Depth of Field: Films About Farming

Depth of Field is a series of short documentaries produced and presented by the National Farmers Union and March Forth Creative. The films will showcase Canadian farmers and farm workers, and their sustainable farming practices on and off the land. Rotational grazing, seed saving, building healthy soils, and working for social justice– different farmers highlight their own priorities and, together, these films tell the story of farming practices that would create the local food system we all want. The National Farmers Union wants Canadian food consumers to know that buying directly from their local farmers, like the ones featured in Depth of Field, contributes to building a thriving localized food system.

National Farmers Union

The National Farmers Union is a farmer-led, democratically-directed farm organization representing Canadian farmers and farm workers, and advocating on issues of importance to us. NFU members believe that the problems facing farmers are common problems, and that farmers producing diverse products must work together to advance effective solutions. The NFU works toward economic, social, and environmental policies that promote economically- and environmentally-sustainable farms and strong farming communities.
