Dear Premier-Elect Kinew:

The National Farmers Union (NFU) sends our congratulations to you and your team on your election victory in Manitoba on the night of October 3, 2023.

The NFU represents thousands of farmers and rural Canadians in every province from coast to coast. We have been advocating forfamily farms, and promoting agroecology and food sovereignty for over 50 years.  Our organization has not wavered in our dedication to a vision of social, ecological and economic justice within Canada and internationally for farmers, eaters and the Earth.  We know that you and your team are committed to a formidable task, and as an organization we wish you all the best as you take on leadership of the province.

The NFU’s Region 5 comprises the beautiful province of Manitoba. NFU Region 5 Coordinators Ian Robson and Matthew Wiens are Manitoba farmers and would be pleased to meet with you and your Ministers to share our understandings and insights on a wide range of farming and food issues. These include the need to build back soil organic matter for productivity and climate resilience, helping more people to become farmers, putting UNDRIP into action in Manitoba, rebuilding  local food processing capacity, helping more Manitobans benefit from healthy, fresh, local food.  We hope to work with your government to bring in improved policies that will support family farms, help rebuild rural communities, promote reconciliation, and maintain health and education all across Manitoba.

We look forward to meeting with you, and would invite your staff to contact Mr. Robson at 431-541-2439, or our national office in Saskatoon, SK at 306-652-9465 to arrange a meeting when it is convenient.   If we can be of further or more extensive assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me, our Regional Coordinators, or our staff in Saskatoon.

With sincere regards,
Jenn Pfenning, President
National Farmers Union
