National Farmers Union in solidarity with Public Service Alliance of Canada
Swift Current, SK – The National Farmers Union (NFU) is standing in solidarity with the 155,000 Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) members who are exercising the fundamental right of organized labour to strike to advance their collective bargaining demands for fair wages, good working conditions and inclusive working places. After nearly a year of lengthy and intense bargaining that started in June 2021, their negotiations with the Treasury Board and Canada Revenue Agency came to an impasse in May 2022. Over 120,000 federal public service workers employed by Treasury Board, and more than 35,000 employed by the Canada Revenue Agency have democratically decided to take strike action.
“Throughout Canada’s history, public sector workers have been on the front lines standing up for fair treatment and breaking new ground for justice in the workplace, improving conditions for all workers. Today’s strike action by PSAC is no different,” said Stewart Wells, NFU 2nd Vice President. “Time and again, the federal government has shown it has endless amounts of money to spend on things like pipelines and tax breaks for multinational corporations. Yet here we see the people the country relies on to do the work needed to provide critical service to Canadians every day must hit the streets to be heard.”
Striking PSAC members now on the picket line are the people whose work is needed to run the Canada Revenue Agency, process employment insurance, immigration, and passport applications; provide administration to allow international trade and border crossings to operate smoothly and efficiently. We encourage our members to join PSAC pickets to show their solidarity with striking workers.
