Join NFU Region 6 (SK) annual summer picnic and meet-up. This year we are gathering at Prairie Garden Seeds, the farm of daughter-father duo and long-time NFU members, Rachelle and Jim Ternier. It is located near Cochin, SK, on the edge of the beautiful Murray Lake (detailed directions below).
We will kick off the day at 12 noon with a potluck lunch. Please bring food to share, as well as drinks, dishes, cups, cutlery and any other eating utensils you may need. Note: This is an off-grid farm so refrigeration and running water will not be available. Bring ample drinking water and plan to clean your dishes when you get home if possible. We will gather to eat in a small quonset (semi-outdoors), equipped with tables and chairs. There will be outhouses and hand sanitizer available for use.
Lunch will be followed by a group discussion, a farm tour, and free time. Bring your bathing suit and towels if you wish to swim or bask on the beach (weather-permitting) and your work clothes and gloves if you’re game to help out with a simple work task, such as weeding. Sun-screen and bug-spray are also recommended.
Please do not bring your pets, but know that this is the home of a very sweet and friendly mid-sized dog named Coco!
Folks are welcome to bring a trailer or a tent and camp overnight on the farm. There are also camping and hotel options nearby at Battlefords Provincial Park and in North Battleford.
If you have any questions or would like to inquire about carpooling opportunities, email Julie at members@nfu.ca.
When approaching Cochin from the South… Immediately BEFORE crossing the bridge take your first RIGHT turn. Follow this small road that goes east with the red-roofed buildings on your left. There are three speed bumps and the road gets rough after that and turns to gravel. You will cross a small bridge over the creek (the creek connects both lakes and runs through Cochin), after which the road goes uphill. Once up the hill, you may see a large sign on your right saying ‘Welcome to Moosomin First Nation’. Turn right/south into the centre of the reserve. On your left will eventually be the Band Office, an admin building, and a hall, on your right eventually is the school and the hockey arena. Follow the curve in the road by the arena and the community hall – you are now driving east between these two buildings and the road goes slightly uphill where you will see a row of houses to your right and then the road goes downhill- GO DOWN THIS HILL. At the bottom of the hill the road goes straight OR curves right; TAKE THE CURVE RIGHT and keep following the gravel road through the bush. At the end of this windy road through the bush, the road continues with a sharp left turn – (going straight would be crossing a texas gate and entering a farm where they have a no trespassing sign) – take the sharp left turn and follow this road, you will notice that the road is now very straight and you are now on Hillside Road (sometimes there is a sign that says this, sometimes it’s knocked down!). A little over 500 meters past this sharp turn left is your first option of a road to the right; turn right and cross the bright red Texas gate. Drive straight on this road for about 2 ½ km, this is the road that leads directly to our place! My house is the one with the blue metal roof on the hillside facing south overlooking the lake. Drive all the way down the hill and turn right at the bottom of the hill towards the Quonset buildings. Park around the Quonset buildings and then follow signs. |
