Alberta On-Farm Slaughter Operation Survey – Make Your Voice Heard!

Calling all Alberta On-Farm Slaughter Operation (OSFO) License holders!

The Province has just released a survey promising to address concerns held by license holders about the changes to on-farm slaughter regulations, and they need to hear from farmers to ensure that the program works for us!

The NFU has prepared this guide to help navigate the survey. It is imperative that as many License holders as possible answer this survey before its closing date on September 22, 2025.

This summer has been stressful for Alberta livestock producers, especially OFSO License holders. This spring started with the closure of the Pigeon Lake facility, dealing a blow to small-scale and mixed farms in the province. Now the main option for most of these farms is the on-farm option created in 2020.

Then in early July the provincial government announced dramatic reductions to the volumes allowed under the On-Farm Slaughter Operation License. The outrage from farmers was clearly heard by the Ministry, who immediately paused those changes — leaving the 2020 regulations in place – for now.

This survey is a great opportunity for you to suggest some real changes that would make the system better. The suggestions that we’ve included in our guide contain some ideas for better changes that could be made to the on-farm slaughter program.
