Building Farmer Power:

The revitalization of Farmers Institutes in BC and working together to strengthen farmer-led advocacy

Virtual Évènement

septembre 7 @ 2:00 pm 4:30 pm PDT

The BC Farmers Union was one of the regional organizations that came together to form the NFU in 1969. At that time, Farmers Institutes (FIs), created by the Farmers and Women’s Institutes Act, already existed in BC as the local gathering place for farmers, so NFU locals never formed. Over the years, a few have remained strong and steady, but many FIs became inactive or reduced their scope of activities. Recently, farmers across the province have been dusting off abandoned FIs and breathing new life into them. Come learn about what is motivating farmers to pick up these tools again now, what farmers can do using the structure of the Farmers Institutes, the legislative changes being sought by a newly revived FI, and what kind of advocacy work is happening.

We will also discuss where the capacities of Farmers Institutes reach their limits, and  how we can build power by using a combination of FIs, for all the things that they do well, and the NFU, with its regional and national networks, ongoing research and education, and strong policy advocacy track record.

Speakers TBA. If you have information or ideas to contribute about how your local Farmers Institute might fit into this conversation, please be in touch with Hannah, Regional Coordinator, dwyer@.nfu.ca or 226-820-0320.

Regional Convention Information

We will also be conducting our regular convention business: regional council elections and resolutions.

Resolutions pertaining only to BC are adopted immediately following our regional vote, those that apply nationally are sent along to national convention once they are passed by a region.

Everyone is welcome to attend and participate, but please note that only farmer and farm worker members may vote or run for elected positions.

Regional Resolutions: May be submitted by any member in the region in good standing to members@nfu.ca. We encourage members to submit their resolutions as far in advance as possible, however we will also accept resolutions from the floor at the convention.

Feel free to contact dwyer@nfu.ca for support putting together a resolution. See the New Members Guide to Regional Conventions (enclosed) for more information on the regional resolutions process.
