Owen Schalk lives and works on a family-owned apiary on Treaty 1 territory. He joined the NFU in 2025, after being impressed by NFU statements defending supply management and small farmers, and by the NFU’s commitment to international solidarity, including its support for the Palestinian people. His engagement with the NFU grew from there, and in 2026, he was elected as the Region 5 youth representative. In addition to his NFU work, Owen sits on the executive of the Manitoba-Cuba Solidarity Committee. He views the progressive farmers’ movement as a key participant in the struggle for social justice and international solidarity in Canada.
