SUMMARY:Sowing Seeds of Change: Alberta Farmer Organising Is Here To Stay!
DESCRIPTION:Join our Regional Workshop Webinar during NFU Days\, our annual membership drive running through February\, when new memberships are available at 50% off! This is your chance to help get that information into the hands of your farming friends and neighbours! \nWe’ll dive into a century of Alberta’s deep agrarian history\, including Black Settlers\, Métis Settlements\, Co-operatives\, and farmer-controlled marketing systems. As well as our region’s current work\, connecting farmers across distances\, strengthening surface rights advocacy\, and growing youth leadership. The union makes us strong. SUMMARY:Hearing Farmer Voices: A virtual town hall for farmers in BC
DESCRIPTION:A virtual town hall meeting to hear farmers’ thoughts on the recommendations of the Premier’s Task Force on Agriculture and Food Economy. \n\n\n\nHow can we use these recommendations to help us build food sovereignty in BC? \n\n\n\nNFU BC invites all farmers and advocates for resilient food systems to join us and share your thoughts. We are a democratic organization of farmers and farmworkers advancing policies that enable food sovereignty. Food sovereignty is\, in short\, food systems by the people\, for the people. If you have a role in feeding our communities\, we want to hear from you. We believe that everyone who grows and eats food deserves to have a say in shaping their food systems. \n\n\n\nWhen the president of the United States started announcing tariffs on Canadian goods and threats of annexation in early 2025\, the BC government responded by assembling a team of experts and sector representatives to provide guidance on how the province should navigate the shifting political and economic landscape. The Premier’s Task Force on Agriculture and Food Economy produced 32 recommendations on 5 key topics: Water\, Competitiveness\, Labour and talent\, Land\, and Investment. \n\n\n\nRead the recommendations here: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/agriculture-seafood/premier-s-task-force-on-agriculture-and-food-economy \n\n\n\nAcross ministries\, the provincial government will be using these recommendations to guide action on strengthening BC’s food systems. We have an opportunity to work together and influence how some of these recommendations are implemented\, and to use this list as a jumping off point to define our own food sovereignty goals. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Today!

SUMMARY:Regenerative Approaches to Ag Policy & Governance
DESCRIPTION:Each month\, NFU-MB (Region 5) hosts an online gathering for our members and supporters to connect and explore a relevant topic.\n\nBuilding on our July gathering focused on regenerative agriculture\, this month we explore possibilities for applying regenerative approaches to agricultural policy and governance.\nDana Penrice\, from Holistic Management Canada\, will join us to guide our discussion. She brings a wealth of knowledge that can help us explore how we might apply the principles of regenerative agriculture and holistic management to how we approach changing agricultural policy. She will also share about the work of Holistic Management Canada\, the Savory Institute\, and Savory’s network hubs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom Drop-ins are a crucial way to connect with the NFU-Manitoba community. SUMMARY:Food Price Inflation and Farmer Livelihood
DESCRIPTION:Canadian farmers have seen no benefit from rising grocery store prices since 2020. Instead\, they are being squeezed by corporate profiteering on all sides. For years\, corporate concentration in Canada’s food system has kept farm gate prices chronically low\, while retail prices rise steadily for consumers. Farmers are forced to accept prices that are decided by large\, multinational commodity traders and processors. At the same time\, they face prohibitively high costs for inputs from oligopolistic suppliers. The system is stacked against farmers and consumers alike. It’s time to confront corporate power in the food system.\n\nJoin the NFU on May 22nd at 3PM EST for a panel webinar on the farmers’ share of food prices and an examination of how corporate concentration in the Canadian food system harms both farmers and consumers featuring Keldon Bester of the Canadian Anti-Monopoly Project; Alex Purdye former Broadbent Institute Fellow; and Alyssa Gerhardt\, PhD student at Dalhousie University.

SUMMARY:Advance Payments Program
DESCRIPTION:The Advance Payments Program is a federal loan guarantee program which provides agricultural producers with easy access to low-cost cash advances.\n\nUnder the program\, you can access up to $1\,000\,000 in total advances based on the value of the eligible agricultural products you will produce or that you have in storage. The Government of Canada pays the interest on the first $100\,000 of your advance (the first $250\,000 for 2024 and 2025). You repay your advance as you sell the agricultural products\, with up to 18 months to fully repay the advance for most commodities (up to 24 months for cattle and bison).\n\nAPP advances can provide you with cash flow to meet your financial needs until you are able to sell your agricultural products. The program can provide marketing flexibility by allowing you to sell your agricultural products based on market conditions rather than the need for cash.\n\nAPP advances are available through 26 participating producer organizations\, that is\, APP Administrators\, across Canada.
