NFU calls for Moratorium on Site C Dam

(Sept. 16, 2015) - The proposed Site C Dam on the Peace River in British Columbia would destroy lands that have provided food and cultural sustenance for First Nations for thousands of years. It would flood over 30,000 acres of fertile land in the Peace River valley, including over 7,000 acres of Class 1 and Class 2 land that is capable of producing an abundance of diverse fruits, vegetables and all kinds of other foods. Its long summer daylight hours combined with rich alluvial soils and the sheltered valley areas provide unique micro-climates and excellent growing conditions. The Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) is calling for a two-year moratorium on development of the Site C Dam. The Chiefs demand that the proposed project be referred to the BC Utilities Commission for a proper independent review, where testimony is done under oath and evidence can be cross-examined. Saskatchewan members of the National Farmers Union (NFU) are concerned about the trend towards increasing ownership of farmland in this province by farmland investors. We are pleased that the Government of Saskatchewan shares our concern regarding implications of investor ownership of farmland and is seeking the input of Saskatchewan’s people on this important topic. NFU releases major report on land ownership and farm debt – “Losing Our Grip – 2015 Update”

<strong<span class="fa-solid fa-angles-right"</span(March 10, 2015, Saskatoon) </strong<span class="fa-solid fa-angles-right"</span– The National Farmers Union (NFU) has released a major new report, <em<span class="fa-solid fa-angles-right"</spanLosing Our Grip - 2015 Update</em<span class="fa-solid fa-angles-right"</span, which revisits and expands upon the information and analysis of corporate farmland buy-up, farm debt and input financing published by the NFU in 2010. The update was undertaken to provide a well-documented assessment of increasing corporate control of farmland and the acceleration of farm debt, now approaching $80 billion. This report will allow farmers, the general public and policy-makers to critically examine the ownership concentration process and the financial mechanisms that facilitate them. The report concludes with a series of policy recommendations to reclaim farmer autonomy and food sovereignty. Read more

The Bill, currently before the BC Legislature, would re-structure the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) decision-making processes and create a 2-tiered system that would result in most of BC’s farmland becoming more vulnerable to development pressure. “BC farmland has been protected by legislation, and as a result, BC has been much more successful that Canada as a whole in keeping both farms and farmers,” said Alberta dairy farmer and NFU President, Jan Slomp. A Provincial Auditor’s 2010 report underscored the “fundamental importance of preserving agricultural land … given the uncertain effects of climate change on our food imports and our agricultural systems.” Read more
