SUMMARY:Confronting Concentration—2022 National Convention
DESCRIPTION:The National Farmers Union’s 53rd National Convention Confronting Concentration will confront corporate concentration in our food systems\, together in Saskatoon\, or from the comfort of your own home. The NFU is eager to host an array of diverse change-makers\, experts\, and organizers to the convention. Find our program highlights here.  \nRegister to attend either in person in Saskatoon or from wherever you are\, virtually. A sliding scale of registration fees exist for members\, BIPOC\, Youth\, Students and Farmworker folks and for non-members.  \nAfter two years of an online convention\, we’ve learned how to make the best of it\, but we’re so excited to finally have the option to be together in person again. Lifelong friendships\, connections and community have been built for over 50 years\, and those relationships are what are at the core of organizing and change making. We’d love to have new people attend the Convention and participate in pre-convention Caucus meetings. Please share with any of your friends who might be interested.  \nIn solidarity!

SUMMARY:Farmworker Gathering
DESCRIPTION:The National Farmers Union voted in favor of offering a new membership type for farm workers which offers all the benefits and voting privileges of farmers at a 50% off the family membership rate. \nWe want to celebrate this exciting shift by gathering farm workers from coast to coast to coast together in an open discussion space. It’s time we add farm worker voices to the NFU in a substantial way. \nLet’s talk – what are the needs of farm workers\, what are the challenges farm workers face\, what are all the untold\, unheard stories of this work\, what do we want to see happen for the betterment of farm worker conditions\, what value do we contribute to a strong\, progressive farm community? \nCome connect with like-minded farm workers in this welcoming space. \nWhen: February 9\, 2022 \n4 – 5:30 PST\n5 – 6:30 PM MST\, YST\n6 – 7:30 PM CST\n7 – 8:30 PM EST\n8 – 930 PM AST

SUMMARY:Terre de Liens - When Citizens Grow Farms
DESCRIPTION:  \n*le français suit \n\nFarmland Committee Speaker Series \n  \nPresented by: \nColine Sovran\, M.P.S.\, Advocacy Officer\, Terre de Liens \n  \n\nLearn how a social movement in France is ‘enabling citizens and peasants to take action on the ground’ through preserving farmland and facilitating access. \n\nAbout Terre de Liens: “[Terre de Liens is] a civic organization established to assist organic and peasant farmers in gaining access to land. The organization also promotes new ways to own and manage land as a common good. Terre de liens has created financial tools (a solidarity investment company and an endowment trust) to collect investment funds and donations\, and educational tools to inform the public and raise awareness about land access and agriculture. It now has a network of 2000 members and 8000 shareholders\, and owns 2400 hectares of farmland\, supporting about 200 farmers.” (Source: https://www.accesstoland.eu/-Terre-de-liens-) \n  \nThis session with guest speaker Coline from Terre de Liens is the first in a 2022 monthly workshop series put on by the NFU’s Farmland Committee. The goal of these sessions is to educate the membership and wider public on alternative land tenure possibilities\, as an initial step in a longer-term pursuit of implementing models to help address land access issues and implement food sovereignty. Join us on January 21st at 9am PST\, and stay tuned for our February session! After Coline’s presentation\, there will be plenty of time for a Q&A. The presentation will be in French\, with live translation into English. \n  \nJoin Us Online: \nFri. Jan. 21st\, 9:00 AM PST \n  \nPlease register here: \n https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMkc-ipqDktG9eO07O1KPwwiYoL90uV0Lpu \n  \nHosted by the Farmland Committee \nThis event was made possible with financial support from the Canada Research Chair program.

SUMMARY:Climate and Community Conversation—Region 1
DESCRIPTION:Shape the conversation on climate change\, income security\, and community resilience – farmers can’t be left out! \nWe are in a farm income crisis. The National Farmers Union (NFU) continues to expose the issue and seek systemic change. In a recent press release; Grocery Prices are Rising and Farmers’ Share Declining as Corporate Processors and Retailers Take More and More\, the NFU states: “public data shows that corporate food processors and retailers have relentlessly\, for decades\, pushed up retail prices even as the prices paid to farmers remained largely stagnant.” Given the state of farm income further detailed in the Tackling the Farm Crisis and the Climate Crisis\, the NFU is convening three virtual conversations in Northern BC and the Yukon\, Northern Alberta\, and the Northwest Territories\, and the Atlantic provinces on the links between climate change\, income security\, and community resilience in partnership with the Green Resilience Project. We want to invite you to an upcoming event in your community. \nDates & times: \n\nNorthern Alberta and the Northwest Territories: January 17 5:30 – 7:30 PM MST\nNorthern BC and the Yukon: January 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 PM MST\, 5:30 – 7:30 PM PST\nAtlantic provinces: January 20\, 5 – 7 PM AST\n\nWho: Farmers and farm workers from the above three regions (NFU members and non-members) \nTo attend\, please register by filling out this google form. Thanks to funding and partnership with the Green Resilience Project\, we are able to offer participants a $50 honorarium for participation. We hope you’ll join us as we make farmers’ experiences heard. \nWhat is the Green Resilience Project? The Green Resilience Project was launched by a group of individuals and organizations working in climate change and income security\, who received funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Climate Action and Awareness Fund to organize a series of conversations on the links between climate change\, income security and community resilience in communities. Farmers can’t be left out of these policy discussions and decisions. You can read more about the Project here.
