SUMMARY:A better world is possible! Utopia in Thought and Action
DESCRIPTION:Utopia is usually considered to be an ideal that exists only in thought but is unable to change our everyday lives. However\, William Paris  believes utopia in fact helps us develop our creative capacities and reshape ordinary life. Utopia is not an ideal created by philosophers– it is the real struggle in our everyday lives to organize the spaces of our lives around freedom\, flourishing\, and solidarity instead of accumulation\, alienation\, and domination. Imagining a better world for farmers\, farming and agriculture is an essential tool for change. Bringing together the space of thought and the space of life is the most important  task of utopia.

SUMMARY:Too much IS too much! Confronting ecological overshoot
DESCRIPTION:The global community is fixated on climate change as the existential threat facing civilization. Bill Rees argues that this focus misses the point entirely.  Global heating is only one symptom of an over-riding meta-problem: ecological overshoot (where societal impacts now exceed the Earth’s capacity to recover) . Overshoot is the inevitable result of excessive material growth on a finite planet driven by industrial capitalism and its hand-maiden\, neoliberal economics. Politically acceptable solutions to global heating are not fixing the climate\, are causing considerable additional environmental damage and are worsening overshoot. Unattended\, overshoot is a terminal condition. What can communities do to increase self-reliance\, enhance food security and otherwise cushion themselves against the coming contraction?NFU climate committee member\, Rick Munroe\, will provide extra context to this conversation about overshoot and growth by presenting on his research on government awareness of this issue. Rick will present about the level of awareness among Government of Canada’s research on this topic and whether or not our federal government has ever analyzed the contradiction between two competing goals: constant economic growth versus ecological health & long-term resource requirements

Resolutions that pass are added to the NFU Policy Statement. \n\n\n\nPrior to the National Convention\, each NFU Region holds an annual Regional Convention where resolutions are debated and voted upon. Resolutions that have been passed at the regional level come forward to the national Convention. \n\n\n\nAll members in good standing residing in the region may submit and vote on resolutions. \n\n\n\nDebate at both regional and national conventions is done according to the rules of order published in Parliamentary Procedure at a Glance\, New Edition by O. Garfield Jones. The goal is to have as many policy resolutions as possible heard and thoroughly debated with the least amount of time wasted.

SUMMARY:The Path to Climate Resilience in Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Curious about what the National Farmer’s Union is working on? Worried about extreme weather ruining your harvests? Want to do more to address agricultural climate impacts than changing practices on your INDIVIDUAL farm? \n\n\n\nJoin a conversation next weekend with the National Farmers Union about advancing climate reselience in agriculture! We’ll be discussing the NFU’s agricultural climate solution proposals – including a bold plan to scale up extension and agronomy services to support farm transitions to regenerative agriculture. \n\n\n\nThis policy has been gaining steam over the last two years and needs a strong advocacy push from us in Quebec to get it included in the next federal budget – we’ll be brainstorming next steps for action! \n\n\n\nThere will also be a short documentary about climate adaptation strategies on one of our local member farms and lots of information about the NFU’s work beyond climate issues. \n\n\n\nDate: Saturday March 29\, 3:30-5:30pm \n\n\n\nLocation: St. George Church in St. Anne (23 rue Perrault) \n\n\n\n➡️ SIGN UP HERE

SUMMARY:Do we have the Right to Repair in Canada?
DESCRIPTION:What happens when our toaster breaks? What can we do with a broken cellphone? Why don’t we have access to repair information for farm machinery? Should equipment manufacturers really be allowed to charge the rates that they do to fix tractors? The right to repair goes beyond the ability for consumers to repair electronics\, appliances\, and machinery. The right to repair is about independence and freedom from major manufacturers in order to have access to timely and inexpensive repairs\, as well as operability between products that suit the needs of consumers and farm businesses. It is also about affordability and sustainability – repairability and durability of products ensure that Canadians do not have to re-buy products that were intentionally designed to be replaced with newer products – also known as planned obsolescence.Dr. Alissa Centivany will present on the current state of the right to repair in Canada\, including legislation on repairability\, interoperability\, and durability. We will hear about recent changes to the Copyright and Competition Acts that have made a substantial right to repair more achievable in Canada. Dr. Centivany will also talk about the values of the right to repair and argue that a right to repair reflects deeper values about how we take care of the tools we use\, ourselves\, and our relationships.

SUMMARY:Green Grabbing & IPES-Food Land Squeeze Report
DESCRIPTION:Unprecedented pressures on global farmland from “green” initiatives like carbon offsets\, tree plantations\, and biofuel crops are accelerating and converging in a  land squeeze that is  driving a surge in land inequality\, rural poverty\, and food insecurity – and risking a tipping point for smallholder agriculture. The Land Squeeze Report published by the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food) details ongoing land dispossession as new forms of land grabs proliferate. Sofía Monsalve Suárez will highlight the problems and discuss the solutions that IPES-Food proposes.\, We will also hear how countries like Colombia are currently working towards such solutions.

SUMMARY:Earth to Mouth: A Film Screening and Panel Discussion of Chinese Canadian Agriculture History
DESCRIPTION:The stories of Chinese immigrants and Chinese Canadians\, especially of their roles in Canada’s food system\, have gone largely undocumented. This history includes survival of Chinese migrants under racist policies that prevented them from acquiring farmland\, and racist attitudes that still persist today. Examining these histories\, especially the resilience of Chinese Canadian farmers and farmworkers to carve out spaces of their own\, are important today in a climate of rising anti-immigrant and anti-Chinese racism. \n\n\n\nFarming is a forty-century tradition in Chinese culture. Chinese immigrant farmers bring with them generations of wisdom about working with nature\, including the philosophy of “food as medicine” (药食同源) and the belief that “land and people are one” (身土不二). These traditions not only guide sustainable farming practices but also shape resilience in the face of systemic barriers. The ability to adapt\, persevere\, and thrive is deeply rooted in these cultural principles\, making the contributions of Chinese Canadian farmers an essential yet often overlooked part of Canada’s agricultural history. \n\n\n\nJoin the National Farmers Union (NFU) and Chinese Canadian Agricultural Development Council (CCADC) on Thursday March 6th at 4 pm PT / 5 pm MT / 6 pm CT / 7 pm ET / 8pm AT for a virtual screening of Yung Chang’s Earth to Mouth. Filmed at the Wing Fong Farm in Ontario\, Earth to Mouth follows the tilling\, planting and harvesting of Asian vegetables destined for Chinese markets and restaurants. On 80 acres of land\, Lau King-Fai\, her son and a half-dozen migrant Mexican workers care for the plants. For Yeung Kwan\, her son\, the farm represents personal and financial independence. For his mother\, it is an oasis of peace. For the Mexican workers\, it provides jobs that help support their children back home. \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening will be a panel discussion and Q&A featuring: \n\n\n\n\nYung Chang\, the film’s award-winning director\, \n\n\n\nJingshu Yao\, PhD student\, University of Toronto Faculty of Information \n\n\n\nDavid Fu\, President of CCADC\, and \n\n\n\nSun Shan\, NFU and CCADC board member\n\n\n\n\nMandarin translation will be available at this event. \n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting \n\n\n\nhttps://nfu-ca.zoom.us/j/83812917061?pwd=4vvuKnslOessAMYJOHbC6u5cMto2FN.1 \n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 838 1291 7061Passcode: 748013 \n\n\n\nPhone: 305 224 1968 US    438 809 7799 Canada \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n Name\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email\n \n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n ProvinceAlbertaBritish ColumbiaManitobaNew BrunswickNewfoundland and LabradorNorthwest TerritoriesNova ScotiaNunavutOntarioPrince Edward IslandQuebecSaskatchewanYukonOtherOptions\n \n I am an NFU member\n How did you hear about this webinar?InstagramFacebookEmail from the NFUForwarded EmailWord of MouthOther\n Register Today

SUMMARY:Achieving Security and Justice through Collective Action and Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:In her 2023 CBC Massey Lecture series\, Astra Taylor argued “Insecurity is really central to the functioning of our political and economic system.” Rising farm debts\, the transformation of land into a financial instrument\, and our reliance on the market to fulfill basic needs has created insecurity and hollowed out rural communities. We live in the most prosperous era in human history\, but it’s also an era of profound insecurity. Ultimately\, however\, we are reliant on each other for our collective existence\, and it is this interdependence that will help us to resist the manufactured insecurity that we face today. \n\n\n\nAstra will argue that the interdependence that is needed will manifest in the form of solidarity. Solidarity must be seen both as a principle and as practice that can address the polycrisis that we face in this age of manufactured insecurity.

SUMMARY:Leave a Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Let’s be clear – the NFU is unique. As a farmer-led organization\, there is nothing like it in Canada. But these are challenging times for organizations like ours\, continuing to tackle the tough issues on a tight budget\, with volunteer farmer leadership from across the country. The NFU needs your financial support if you are able to contribute. \n\n\n\nLearn about Leaving A Legacy\n\n\n\nLegacy donations can reduce your tax burden while ensuring your funds go directly to the important\, farmer-led work you want to see continue. \n\n\n\n40% of adult Canadians do not have a will and farmers’ finances are uniquely challenging. Planning may be possible to ensure the next generation’s success on (or off) your farm while supporting the ongoing work of the one farm organization that will protect their broader interests. It’s time to make a plan of action and be prepared. \n\n\n\nThe NFU and National Farmers Foundation will be hosting an online workshop on Thursday Feb. 20\, 2025 at 3pm EST about legacy donations. The workshop with Mike Skrypnek\, will cover: \n\n\n\n\nThat estate taxes can be minimized and even eliminated\n\n\n\nYou can prevent yourself from being taxed “twice“\n\n\n\nHow to defer capital gains when selling investments\, even with today’s proposed budget changes\n\n\n\nHow to generate income for life with assets you own\n\n\n\nHow you can take control of your legacy\, and our government supports it.\n\n\n\n\nRegister here. We look forward to learning with you.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): The NFU’s recent report
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) are lower-emission\, non-fossil-fuel energy sources for the world’s aircraft fleet—“drop-in” fuels that require no modifications to aircraft or engines. The proposal is to make SAFs largely from biological sources: corn\, soybeans\, and canola now and over the next decade or so\, and then increasingly from straw and other “agricultural residues” and from purpose-grown energy crops such as grasses or fast-growing trees (with a minor portion from forestry residues). Why should citizens and policymakers be concerned about SAFs?  Because the immense scale of the global SAF project creates significant potential to move us away from many of our food systems\, climate\, decarbonization\, sustainability\, and social justice goals. At the same time\, the huge\, global SAF project may fail in its stated intent: to slash greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and warming effects from a rapidly expanding aviation sector.Darrin Qualman\, NFU Director of Climate Crisis Policy and Action\, will explain SAFs and tell webinar participants why the global SAF megaproject may be among the largest factors shaping agriculture and food systems this century.

SUMMARY:Organic Seed Production
DESCRIPTION:Organic Vegetable Seed Production is a self-directed\, online\, 8 week\, comprehensive intermediate course focused on delivering the science and business of organic vegetable seed production. The course is national in scope but provides opportunities for learning and mentorship specific to your region. \nDuring this 8 week course\, students will be offered a self-directed learning experience with live opportunities for mentorship with established Canadian seed growers and networking opportunities with their student peers but no formal instruction. \nStudents will be offered “office hours” with mentors – established Canadian seed growers – where they may ask questions and seek guidance on course materials and assessments as well as receive feedback on their seed crop plan. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in a regionally delivered farmer mentorship program to support continued hands-on learning throughout the growing season. Outside of a mandatory orientation session\, students are not required to participate in these live opportunities in order to successfully complete the course\, although it is strongly encouraged for a full learning experience.

SUMMARY:Free School for Farmworkers: Athletes In Overalls - Movement Health & Injury Prevention
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who has farmed for a day\, a week\, a month\, or a full season knows that farming is a MARATHON (maybe a series of marathons!)\, and not a sprint. When we look at farmwork through the lens of sport and athleticism\, what changes for us? How does that impact our diet\, our noticing in our bodies\, our sleep hygiene\, and our confidence in how we advocate for ourselves? \n\n\n\nAt the next Free School session\, longtime farmer and farmworker\, strength athlete\, and personal trainer Cynthia Flores of Labor-Movement will discuss movement health and wellness for farmworkers from an athletic perspective. Cynthia asks: What does it mean to be a farmworker and an athlete? What is movement self-advocacy? \n\n\n\nYou can expect to learn tips on managing food\, fluid\, sleep\, and stress for best performance over long days and the season. The discussion will focus on safe lifts using hinges and squats\, reducing the potential of low back pain or injury\, and moving and carrying loads. \n\n\n\nThere will be time for Q&A and discussion so bring your questions and experiences! \n\n\n\nJoin us Tuesday\, January 28\, at 3:30 pm PT/6:30 pm ET on Zoom. This session will not be recorded. \n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE \n\n\n\nFacilitator bio: Cynthia Flores\, owner and founder of Labor-Movement LLC\, owned and operated a vegetable production for 20 years in western Maine\, and turkey farmed for 12 holiday seasons. She has been a strength athlete for 12 years\, and is a Certified Personal Trainer and Licensed Massage Therapist. Founded in 2020\, Labor-Movement works with farmers and farmworkers in body mechanics and movement pattern training\, with a goal of preventing injuries and extending career longevity. In 2024\, Cynthia worked with over 900 farmers in 18 states and British Columbia. \n\n\n\nAccessibility information: This session will be facilitated in English and simultaneously interpreted into Spanish by Cooperativa Brujúlas. Closed captioning will also be available. \n\n\n\nCo-hosted by Not Our Farm\, UW-Extension\, and FairShare CSA Coalition. \n\n\n\nPlease note that Free School for Farmworkers sessions are a farmworker-only space. \n\n\n\n*We define a farmworker as someone working on a farm they do not own\, for or without pay\, including interns\, apprentices\, cooperative workers\, and aspiring farmworkers. If you have questions about whether you are eligible to participate\, please contact Anita Adalja at anita@notourfarm.org

SUMMARY:Lives and Experiences of South Asian Migrant Agricultural Workers in British Columbia
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1970s\, a group of young South Asian men  in BC recognized the need for farmworkers to organize\, which led to the creation of the Canadian Farmworkers Union (CFU). A documentary about the CFU\, celebrated images of its members and showed how women joined the struggle for better working conditions. While the CFU seemed to be  a success story\,  when conducting interviews in rural Abbotsford this past year\, it became clear to Dr. Anushay Malik that the conditions the CFU fought against are still very much alive and well in rural BC.In this NFUniversity session Dr. Malik will chronicle the formation of the CFU\, its successes\, and why those successes were short-lived. This exploration of the history of the CFU will help answer key questions about labour organizing\, including: what motivates workers to come together to form a union at some points\, and at other times\, resist unionizing efforts? How did the CFU manage to involve so many migrant women in the union? Why didn’t the CFU lead to lasting change? What are the current conditions for South Asian farmworker women in BC today?

SUMMARY:Part 4: Financial Barriers to Climate Action Implementation
DESCRIPTION:Financing is one of the most common challenges local governments face when looking to put their climate plans into action. Municipal governments are limited in the tools available to them to raise revenue\, being largely dependent on property taxes\, user fees\, and funding from other levels of government. Though climate mitigation and adaptation will ultimately result in cost-savings for governments and residents alike\, many projects require significant initial investment\, which can be a deterrent for cash-strapped municipalities. \nHowever\, municipalities are also creating new and innovative solutions\, creating taxation structures\, working with new partners\, and tapping into new sources of revenue. This webinar will feature a discussion of the range of different climate financing options available to municipalities\, as well as a case study of one community’s successful approach to financing climate action.
