SUMMARY:NFUniversity – Seed Activism: Global Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 25th\, 12:00 – 1:30 PM Pacific\n\n\n\nNFUniversity is inviting you to register for our class on Seed Activism presented on Thursday\, March 25\, 2021\, at noon Pacific / 1PM Mountain / 2PM Central / 3PM Eastern / 4PM Atlantic. \n\n\n\nIn Canada and around the world\, there has been a corporate push in the past two decades to strengthen laws and regulations governing seeds and plant varieties. These developments have proven highly controversial and have prompted a resurgence of activism around seeds. In this NFUniversity session\, Dr. Karine Peschard will draw on the experiences of Brazil\, India\, New Zealand and Norway to provide a global perspective on these developments. How have different groups – peasants and family farmers\, large farmers\, Indigenous peoples and civil society organizations – come together to oppose these legislative changes? What are the parallels with recent developments in Canada (namely\, Bill C-18 and the Seeds Act Regulations)\, and what can be learned from these countries’ experiences? This session will highlight common trends among countries with different agricultural landscapes\, and present successful examples of mobilizations against seed enclosures. \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nKarine Peschard is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy\, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies\, Geneva. Trained as an anthropologist\, her research interests center on intellectual property\, agrobiodiversity\, legal activism\, peasant rights and seed sovereignty\, with a focus on Brazil and India. Her work has appeared in several edited books and academic journals\, including the Oxford Handbook of Law and Anthropology\, the Annual Review of Anthropology and the Journal of Peasant Studies (JPS). She recently co-edited a JPS Special Forum on Seed Activism\, and is preparing a book entitled ‘Seed Activism: Patent Politics and Litigation in the Global South.’ \n\n\n\nhttps://www.graduateinstitute.ch/academic-departments/faculty/karine-peschard \n\n\n\n\nEvent Materials\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar recording: Seed Activism — Global Perspectives\n\n\n\nSeed activism is about defending farmers’ rights in the face of expanding corporate control over plant genetics\, and global perspectives matter because countries are pressured through trade agreements and international standards—so victories\, setbacks\, and strategies in one place shape what’s possible everywhere. The international treaty known as International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) promotes plant breeders’ rights as intellectual property\, and its 1991 convention (UPOV 91) dramatically strengthens those rights while restricting farmers’ long-standing ability to save\, reuse\, and exchange seed. \n\n\n\nYet countries like India\, Brazil\, and Norway show that alternatives are possible when farmers and civil society organize to defend seed sovereignty. In Canada\, the fight continues after the adoption of UPOV 91 in 2015\, with ongoing pressure to further limit farm-saved seed. The message is clear: resistance works. Farmers\, advocates\, and communities can shape seed policy—but only if we stay informed\, mobilize together\, and insist that seeds remain a shared foundation of food sovereignty\, not just a source of corporate profit. \n\n\n\nVisit our NFUniversity playlist on our Youtube channel to see a complete list of our NFUniversity recorded webinars. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Agroecology
DESCRIPTION:NFUniversity is inviting you to register for our class on Agroecology presented on Thursday\, March 11\, 2021. \n\n\n\nAgroecology is a way of farming\, and a way of thinking about farming.  It takes seriously the idea that a farm is an ecosystem\, made up of plants and soil organisms\, powered by the sun\, subject to disturbances\, and resilient\, or not.  Agroecology encourages us to take a whole-system approach\, to look to biology rather than industry\, to diversify and to close loops\, and to see nature as exemplar\, not nuisance. \n\n\n\nJoin us as our speaker for this lecture\, Dr. Jennifer Blesh\, delves into Agroecology and help us think about what it might look like on the Canadian farm landscape.

SUMMARY:Learning from Land Partnerships
DESCRIPTION:A discussion about alternative farm business models and the practice of land-sharing.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nFarmland access is one of the biggest challenges facing new and young farmers. Increasingly\, new farmers are partnering with established farmers to access land and create partnerships. Some farmers are even forming collectives and co-ops to share the challenges of farming and land ownership. These partnerships aren’t always easy\, but we can learn a lot from both the challenges and the successes. We’ve convened three people to share their experiences with land partnerships\, including tips on what to look for in a land partner\, how to make a partnership\, and advice for people who want to do the same. \nJoin us on February 11 at 7pm EST for stories and insights from these exciting panelists: \n\nAlexandra Zalucky – The Elmgrove Organic Collective is a group of small-scale farming businesses who share land and a passion for sustainable growing in Sutton\, ON.\nErin Richan – Highland Gem Farm is a first-generation farm business growing vegetables and cut flowers for market and a summer CSA program in Lanark County\, ON.\nMike Degange – The Black River Worker Co-op is a not-for-profit worker cooperative based in Matheson\, ON. focused on reviving\, developing and sharing regenerative alternatives to farming and living.

SUMMARY:NFUniversity Climate Class: Understanding Emissions Trading\, Carbon Markets\, and Offsets
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the inaugural NFUniversity Climate Class\, where we will take a critical look at emissions trading and carbon markets. \n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nIs it a good idea to use financial markets to trade soil carbon sequestration credits or tree planting credits to companies like Exxon in order to enable them to offset emissions or get to “net zero”? Is net zero even a credible concept? How should governments structure programs and payments designed to incentivize farmers to adopt practices that build soils? How can we better understand the carbon “offset” protocols now being developed by Canadian federal and provincial governments? \n\n\n\nAbout NFUniversity\n\n\n\nThe National Farmers Union is launching a series of monthly webinars wherein experts\, researchers\, farmers\, and others will provide advanced (but accessible) analysis and information to NFU members and the public on a range of topics\, including seeds\, livestock\, climate\, sustainability\, and justice. The sessions will build upon the foundational knowledge many NFU members and others already have and delve deeper into issues to raise our understanding to a higher level. The aim is to increase citizens’ capacities to analyze\, advocate\, and act. \n\n\n\nClasses will consist of approximately 90 minutes of presentations and Q and A\, followed by an informal discussion if participants wish to continue the conversation. \n\n\n\nSessions will be conducted in English\, with French interpretation provided.

We encourage all members and other interested people to attend our Saskatchewan Convention. Our conventions are always lively where new ideas are explored and direction is given for our Region. \nYou are invited to a tour of the Plant Gene Resources of Canada (Canada’s seed bank) on Wednesday July 24 from 3:00 to 4:30 PM. If weather is inclement we will tour the PGRC’s indoor facilities instead. \nOur Public Event on Wednesday evening 7:00 pm at Queens House is a presentation called “Farmland Drainage: A Looming Environmental Crisis”. He has extensive knowledge surrounding farmland drainage and wetland loss as a Conservation Officer stationed throughout Saskatchewan\, as a Wetlands Specialist with Saskatchewan Environment and\, in the last fourteen years of his career as a Watershed Planner with the Water Security Agency. Jeff is a co-founder of the Saskatchewan Environmental Alliance; a group of concerned forward thinking citizens working on innovative solutions to contemporary environmental problems. He holds a recognized Environmental Professional (EP) designation in Natural Resource Management and is principal in Mind’s Eye Consulting (Saskatchewan) which is involved in watershed management\, environmental law enforcement\, and present environmental water issues in Saskatchewan. Jeff ranches in the Beaver Hills area of west central Saskatchewan. \nGlenn Wright is an engineer who was born and raised in Saskatoon. Scratch that engineer part — he prefers to be thought of as a problem solver — perhaps that is what drew him to farming. All of Glenn’s extended family farmed and he was always envious of his cousins who lived out of the city. In 2004 Glenn and his wife Shannon moved out of the city and began growing a small farming operation near Vanscoy\, SK. Growing the farm has required off employment; Glenn worked as an engineer mining uranium for 14 years before retiring in 2016 to pursue a law degree. Glenn is currently in his last year of law school at the University of Saskatchewan.  He is very focused on sustainable transition initiatives: renewable energy\, electric transport\, home insulation retrofits\, regenerative agriculture\, politics\, and activism. Glenn is also the author of the NFU’s affidavit in the constitutional challenge regarding GHG pricing. \nRegistration Fees:\n• July 24\, Public Event 7:00 – 9:00 pm: by donation\n• July 25\, Regional Convention 9:00 am – 4:00 pm (including lunch): $60\n• July 25\, Regional Convention Youth under 25 years (includes lunch): $25 \nPlease pre-register for Convention by emailing Glenn Tait\, Regional Coordinator at gttait@sasktel.net or by calling 306-892-4342 so we can let Queens House know the number of people attending for lunch preparations. \nAccommodation: If you wish to stay overnight at Queens House\, please contact them directly at 306 242-1916. SUMMARY:Webinar - Building solidarity with Indigenous peoples for food sovereignty
DESCRIPTION:The National Farmers Union’s 2019 Webinar Series on Indigenous Food Sovereignty and Settler-Colonialism in Canadian Agriculture  \nThe NFU invites all our members and allies to join a series of on-line discussions (“webinars”) on Indigenous food sovereignty and settler-colonialism in Canadian agriculture. The discussions will take place over the course of the winter and spring of 2019. \nThe first webinar will take place on-line on 27 February 2019 at 6:30 PM Eastern Time. We are very pleased to be welcoming Danielle Boissoneau and Adrianne Xavier. \nDanielle Boissoneau is Anishnaabe kwe writer\, mother and seedkeeper. She actively reclaims space on the land and in her mind for new ways of living. Decolonization through intentional practice of building relationships with the land\, with food and with the people is another way that she shares herself with the world. Danielle has shared her written words with Briarpatch Magazine\, GUTS Magazine\, as well as being a contributing writer to the Two Row Times. She grows her children and her food with love and power. \nAdrianne Lickers Xavier knows the power of food! As a predoctoral fellow at Queens University this year she is working to complete her doctoral education with research that centres on food security at her home community of Six Nations in southern Ontario. She has experience in community based grass roots food as well as work in the larger food movement. Adrianne’s research integrates food security\, culture\, community building and gender and believes that individuals make the difference. \nPurpose of the webinar series: The NFU has a firm commitment to building relationships of solidarity with Indigenous peoples in Canada. We hope this webinar will: \n\nDeepen our understanding of on-going settler colonialism in Canada from the perspective of Indigenous peoples who are the experts of their own histories and experiences;\nBuild relationships based on shared interests in food sovereignty and acknowledgement of differences;\nDiscuss pathways for solidarity and joint action between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples to challenge settler-colonialism in the food system and contribute to building food sovereignty for all.\n\nThis webinar will be held on the Zoom online meeting platform. \nJoin the meeting by computer or smart phone by clicking https://zoom.us/j/195771300 . SUMMARY:Save Our Seed Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to everyone who attended and participated! Click here to view the PowerPoint presentation given at the webinar. \nAg Canada has launched consultations on proposals to increase seed royalties either by an End Point Royalty or with Trailing Contracts. The proposed royalty scheme would have farmers who use their own seed pay millions of dollars more to seed companies every year\, and make illegal the ancient practice of freely saving and reusing seed by creating new regulations under the Plant Breeders Rights Act. \nIn this webinar\, Terry Boehm\, Chair of the National Farmers Union Seed Committee and former NFU President\, will explain how the proposed royalty system would harm farmers\, citizens\, and society in general — and what we can do to stop this from happening. The webinar will also include a Question and Answer session. \nThis webinar will be held on the Zoom online meeting platform. If this is your first Zoom meeting\, please go to https://zoom.us/ and “sign up” at least 10 minutes before the meeting starts. If you are using your smart phone you may need to download the app before you join the meeting. \nJoin the webinar \n\nBy computer or smart phone — click https://zoom.us/j/923097026.\nBy telephone — call 1 647 558 0588\, meeting ID is 923 097 026.\n\nPlease join the webinar by 1:00 PM Eastern Time. If you are outside of Ontario or Quebec\, adjust for your own time zone (see https://www.timeanddate.com/time/zone/canada for help) \nTo stay informed on the #SaveOurSeed campaign and farm saved seed royalty issues\, subscribe to the SOS Action Group.

SUMMARY:NFU Region 6\, District 3 Convention
DESCRIPTION:The Region 6\, District 3 (south western Saskatchewan) will be holding its Annual District Convention on Saturday\, January 26\, 2019 in the meeting room at the Modern Family Restaurant\, Swift Current\, SK\, 49 Central Ave N. \n The meeting will commence at 3:00 P.M. Dinner will be ordered off the menu. \nThe District Annual Convention is one of the cornerstones of the democratic process in the NFU\, so it’s absolutely vital that you\, your spouse and your children over the age of 14 exercise your right to participate.  Resolutions may be presented and considered at this Convention; if passed\, they will go to the National Convention for possible adoption as NFU national policy.  Another purpose of this Convention is to elect from among the members of the Union in your district\, a District Director\, a Women’s District Director and a Youth District Director. \nOur keynote speaker will be Cam Goff\, speaking on the corporate seed industry’s efforts to bring in new royalties to keep farmers from using farm-saved seed — and what the NFU is doing to protect farmers’ age-old right to freely save and reuse our own seed. \nIf you require further information\, you may call Ralph Renwick at (306) 587-7793 or (306) 587-2331.
