DESCRIPTION:This year’s convention theme is Food. Sovereignty. Justice. Building Collective Strategies. To confront the threats to Canada’s sovereignty\, ongoing tariff disputes\, and the rise of authoritarianism\, NFU farmers\, farm workers\, and their allies are building a vibrant social movement. Our goals are to strengthen democracy\, amplify the voice of organized labour\, and improve food and climate resilience. We are coming together to advocate for the infrastructure and resources farmers need to make sure affordable and sustainable food is available to Canada’s diverse communities and that there is economic dignity for all the workers who produce it. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please visit the main convention page at: https://www.nfu.ca/2025convention/

SUMMARY:Region 8 (BC) Annual Convention
DESCRIPTION:Building Farmer Power\n\n\n\nThe revitalization of Farmers Institutes in BC and working together to strengthen farmer-led advocacy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe BC Farmers Union was one of the regional organizations that came together to form the NFU in 1969. At that time\, Farmers Institutes (FIs)\, created by the Farmers and Women’s Institutes Act\, already existed in BC as the local gathering place for farmers\, so NFU locals never formed. Over the years\, a few have remained strong and steady\, but many FIs became inactive or reduced their scope of activities. Recently\, farmers across the province have been dusting off abandoned FIs and breathing new life into them. Come learn about what is motivating farmers to pick up these tools again now\, what farmers can do using the structure of the Farmers Institutes\, the legislative changes being sought by a newly revived FI\, and what kind of advocacy work is happening. \n\n\n\nWe will also discuss where the capacities of Farmers Institutes reach their limits\, and  how we can build power by using a combination of FIs\, for all the things that they do well\, and the NFU\, with its regional and national networks\, ongoing research and education\, and strong policy advocacy track record. \n\n\n\nSpeakers TBA. If you have information or ideas to contribute about how your local Farmers Institute might fit into this conversation\, please be in touch with Hannah\, Regional Coordinator\, dwyer@.nfu.ca or 226-820-0320. \n\n\n\nRegional Convention Information \n\n\n\nWe will also be conducting our regular convention business: regional council elections and resolutions. \n\n\n\nResolutions pertaining only to BC are adopted immediately following our regional vote\, those that apply nationally are sent along to national convention once they are passed by a region. \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome to attend and participate\, but please note that only farmer and farm worker members may vote or run for elected positions. \n\n\n\nRegional Resolutions: May be submitted by any member in the region in good standing to members@nfu.ca. We encourage members to submit their resolutions as far in advance as possible\, however we will also accept resolutions from the floor at the convention. \n\n\n\nFeel free to contact dwyer@nfu.ca for support putting together a resolution. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:NFU-MB Zoom Drop-in: Reconciliation & Solidarity on Food Sovereignty
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, August 21\, at 7 pm to connect with other NFU-Manitoba members and supporters on reconciliation and acting in solidarity with Indigenous peoples fighting for food sovereignty. \n\n\n\nIndigenous peoples’ diverse knowledges\, worldviews and political economies provide crucial guidance for building more respectful\, collaborative\, just and life-affirming relationships with one another and the Earth. \n\n\n\nPlease join us on Thursday\, August 21\, at 7 pm to connect with other NFU-Manitoba members and supporters on reconciliation and acting in solidarity with Indigenous peoples fighting for food sovereignty. \n\n\n\nIndigenous peoples’ diverse knowledges\, worldviews and political economies provide crucial guidance for building more respectful\, collaborative\, just and life-affirming relationships with one another and the Earth. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImportantly\, the work of NFU members over many decades\, along with Indigenous-led learning circles\, have laid the groundwork for a resolution passed at our 2023 national convention to create an Indigenous Solidarity Strategy where Indigenous and non-Indigenous/settler NFU members can work across committees and caucuses to reflect on and educate ourselves about Indigenous sovereignties\, land justice\, and rematriation. \nPlease join us for an open discussion on these important topics co-led by Matthew Wiens\, regional representative\, and our regional organizer\, Leanna Wiebe. Matthew will provide further context for the NFU’s Indigenous Solidarity Strategy and where this work is at today. Afterwards\, Leanna will lead a round-table discussion on possible opportunities and pathways for action in Manitoba. \nZoom Drop-ins are a crucial way to connect with the NFU-Manitoba community. Most of the event will be yours for open discussions\, building connections among our members\, and collective strategizing for action. We hope to see you there! \n\n\n\nZoom Link

SUMMARY:Exploring Small Water Cycles: Expanding the Climate Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Didi Pershouse presents an entirely new view of water\, soils\, and climate. You will learn how the living matrix of a “soil sponge” is foundational to making life on earth possible\, and how the work of other species creates our climate and weather. \n\n\n\nWe can address many of our major challenges in the agricultural sector through simple changes in land management\, in collaboration with the essential workforce of plants\, animals\, insects\, fungi\, and microbes. Managing land in ways that restore nature’s soil sponge and diverse vegetation can provide many interrelated benefits such as: increased resilience to flood and drought\, reduction of wildfire risk\, and increased habitat and biodiversity. It can also result in healthier crops\, animals\, and humans\, and thriving local economies. \n\n\n\n\nEvent Presenter(s)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDidi Pershouse\n\n\n\nDidi Pershouse is the author of  The Ecology of Care: Medicine\, Agriculture\, Money\, and the Quiet Power of Human and Microbial Communities and Understanding Soil Health and Watershed Function. She teaches participatory workshops both in person and online\, helping to show the nested relationships between soil health\, human health\, water cycles\, and climate resiliency.  She is the founder of the Land and Leadership Initiative and the Center for Sustainable Medicine\, and a co-founder of the “Can we Rehydrate California?” Initiative. She is an independent trainer and curriculum developer for the UN-FAO Farmer Field School Program and the Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming Initiative in India. She was one of five speakers at the United Nations-FAO World Soil Day in 2017. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar recording\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExploring Small Water Cycles: Expanding the Climate Conversation\n\n\n\nLinks to works cited in the webinar: \n\n\n\n\nThe Ecology of Care: Medicine\, Agriculture\, Money\, and the Quiet Power of Human and Microbial Communities\, by Didi Pershouse \n\n\n\nHealth and Watershed Function\n\n\n\nLand and Leadership Initiative\n\n\n\n “Can we Rehydrate California?” Initiative \n\n\n\n2017 United Nations-FAO World Soil Day\n\n\n\n\nVisit our NFUniversity playlist on our Youtube channel to see a complete list of our NFUniversity recorded webinars.

SUMMARY:Food Price Inflation and Farmer Livelihood: The Declining Farmers' Share
DESCRIPTION:Canadian farmers have seen no benefit from rising grocery store prices since 2020. Instead\, they are being squeezed by corporate profiteering on all sides. For years\, corporate concentration in Canada’s food system has kept farm gate prices chronically low\, while retail prices rise steadily for consumers. Farmers are forced to accept prices that are decided by large\, multinational commodity traders and processors. At the same time\, they face prohibitively high costs for inputs from oligopolistic suppliers. \n\n\n\nThe system is stacked against farmers and consumers alike. It’s time to confront corporate power in the food system. Join the NFU on May 22nd at 3PM EST for a panel webinar on the farmers’ share of food prices and an examination of how corporate concentration in the Canadian food system harms both farmers and consumers featuring Keldon Bester of the Canadian Anti-Monopoly Project; Alex Purdye former Broadbent Institute Fellow; and Alyssa Gerhardt\, PhD student at Dalhousie University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlyssa Gerhardt is a PhD student in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Dalhousie University. She specializes in economic sociology\, studying personal debt in Atlantic Canada using a mixed-method approach. Alyssa has been involved in several different projects with the Rural Futures Research Centre at Dalhousie\, including a regional study on work\, income\, and community. Recently she co-authored Canada’s Food Price Report 2021\, a national report that forecasts food prices and examines food trends as well as a study of farmers market food prices to better understand alternative food systems. \n\n\n\nKeldon Bester is the Executive Director of CAMP\, and a Fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI). Keldon has worked as a Special Advisor at the Competition Bureau\, as a Fellow at the Open Markets Institute\, and as a consultant across sectors in Canada. \n\n\n\nAlex Purdye is a research analyst and a master’s student at Carleton University’s Institute of Political Economy. His research focuses include monetary theory\, currency internationalization\, classical political economy\, and the history of economic thought.

SUMMARY:Advance Payments Program
DESCRIPTION:The Advance Payments Program is a federal loan guarantee program which provides agricultural producers with easy access to low-cost cash advances.\n\nUnder the program\, you can access up to $1\,000\,000 in total advances based on the value of the eligible agricultural products you will produce or that you have in storage. The Government of Canada pays the interest on the first $100\,000 of your advance (the first $250\,000 for 2024 and 2025). You repay your advance as you sell the agricultural products\, with up to 18 months to fully repay the advance for most commodities (up to 24 months for cattle and bison).\n\nAPP advances can provide you with cash flow to meet your financial needs until you are able to sell your agricultural products. The program can provide marketing flexibility by allowing you to sell your agricultural products based on market conditions rather than the need for cash.\n\nAPP advances are available through 26 participating producer organizations\, that is\, APP Administrators\, across Canada.

SUMMARY:A better world is possible! Utopia in Thought and Action
DESCRIPTION:Utopia is usually considered to be an ideal that exists only in thought but is unable to change our everyday lives. However\, William Paris  believes utopia in fact helps us develop our creative capacities and reshape ordinary life. Utopia is not an ideal created by philosophers– it is the real struggle in our everyday lives to organize the spaces of our lives around freedom\, flourishing\, and solidarity instead of accumulation\, alienation\, and domination. Imagining a better world for farmers\, farming and agriculture is an essential tool for change. Bringing together the space of thought and the space of life is the most important  task of utopia.

SUMMARY:Too much IS too much! Confronting ecological overshoot
DESCRIPTION:The global community is fixated on climate change as the existential threat facing civilization. Bill Rees argues that this focus misses the point entirely.  Global heating is only one symptom of an over-riding meta-problem: ecological overshoot (where societal impacts now exceed the Earth’s capacity to recover) . Overshoot is the inevitable result of excessive material growth on a finite planet driven by industrial capitalism and its hand-maiden\, neoliberal economics. Politically acceptable solutions to global heating are not fixing the climate\, are causing considerable additional environmental damage and are worsening overshoot. Unattended\, overshoot is a terminal condition. What can communities do to increase self-reliance\, enhance food security and otherwise cushion themselves against the coming contraction?NFU climate committee member\, Rick Munroe\, will provide extra context to this conversation about overshoot and growth by presenting on his research on government awareness of this issue. Rick will present about the level of awareness among Government of Canada’s research on this topic and whether or not our federal government has ever analyzed the contradiction between two competing goals: constant economic growth versus ecological health & long-term resource requirements

The purpose of the regional convention shall be to: \n\n\n\n\nDevelop strategy and action on matters concerning the members residing in the region which is consistent with national policy;\n\n\n\nConsider policies and programs to be recommended to the annual convention;\n\n\n\nElect one member\, or such other number of members as may be assigned from the region\, to the board;\n\n\n\nElect one women’s advisory committee member;\n\n\n\nElect one youth advisory committee member;\n\n\n\nElect one BIPOC advisory committee member;\n\n\n\nElect one International Programs committee member. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Resolutions:\n\n\n\nThe NFU’s Policy Statement compiles all policies — including position statements\, policy recommendations to government\, action directives\, etc. – that have been passed by a majority vote of delegates at previous national conventions. \n\n\n\nEach year members bring forward new policy proposals in the form of resolutions for debate on the floor of the National Convention. Resolutions that pass are added to the NFU Policy Statement. \n\n\n\nPrior to the National Convention\, each NFU Region holds an annual Regional Convention where resolutions are debated and voted upon. Resolutions that have been passed at the regional level come forward to the national Convention. \n\n\n\nAll members in good standing residing in the region may submit and vote on resolutions. \n\n\n\nDebate at both regional and national conventions is done according to the rules of order published in Parliamentary Procedure at a Glance\, New Edition by O. Garfield Jones. The goal is to have as many policy resolutions as possible heard and thoroughly debated with the least amount of time wasted.
