SUMMARY:NFU-O Convention and AGM
DESCRIPTION:This year’s theme\, “Deeply Rooted”\, reflects the structural forces at play which prevent swift and meaningful action to counter and mitigate the effects of climate change. Yet “Deeply Rooted” also celebrates the agroecological solutions to climate mitigation: deep roots sequester more carbon in the soil and are more resilient to extreme weather conditions. Our AGM & Convention panels\, including our keynote address from Dr. Priscilla Settee\, will fill the space in between these two ideas. \nNFU-O’s Regional Convention and AGM is coming up on March 3-4. SUMMARY:Disaster Response Kitchen Table Talks
DESCRIPTION:Were you impacted by natural disasters this season? Supply chain issues? Still scrambling after receiving aid or having difficulty accessing it? \nThe NFU Region 8 (BC & Yukon) wants to talk with farmers and farmworkers about effective disaster recovery and hear about your experiences this year. On March 2nd\, we are hosting a Region 8 Disaster Response Kitchen Table event\, where you can learn with us how disaster response is structured elsewhere in the world to protect farmers and food systems\, and then share with us what supports were helpful this year\, what was missing\, and what will be necessary in the future as disasters intensify. \nAt 2021 National Convention\, the NFU membership passed a formal resolution to press provincial and federal governments to legislate agriculture-specific plans for the emergency management of compound natural disasters. Your participation in this Kitchen Table will directly feed into the NFU’s ongoing process to develop this policy proposal. \nPlease pre-register by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Alternative Forms of Farmland Tenure
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, February 17th NFU’s Farmland Committee will host Ian McSweeny Organizational Director of Agrarian Trust to discuss the principles of the organization\, its history and structure\, the work it does creating individual agrarian commons and the commons alliance\, and some context on US agriculture and land trusts. \nAbout Ian McSweeny: Ian’s work has focused on the human connection to soil and food.  To that end\, he has founded a brokerage and consulting company\, acted as Executive Director of the Russel Foundation\, and served on many Boards and Commissions. Recognized as a “40 under 40” leader in New Hampshire\, he was also selected for the Leadership Institute at Food Solutions New England.  Presently he is Organizational Director of Agrarian Trust\, a nationally-supported\, community-held land and agrarian property that supports sustainable food production\, ecological stewardship\, community vitality\, and equitable land access for the next generation of American farmers. He lives with his wife and family on a small New Hampshire farm that uses ecological management practises and is protected by a conservation easement. \nJoin us for an inspiring session on agriculture\, land trusts and community. SUMMARY:Farmworker Gathering
DESCRIPTION:The National Farmers Union voted in favor of offering a new membership type for farm workers which offers all the benefits and voting privileges of farmers at a 50% off the family membership rate. \nWe want to celebrate this exciting shift by gathering farm workers from coast to coast to coast together in an open discussion space. It’s time we add farm worker voices to the NFU in a substantial way. \nLet’s talk – what are the needs of farm workers\, what are the challenges farm workers face\, what are all the untold\, unheard stories of this work\, what do we want to see happen for the betterment of farm worker conditions\, what value do we contribute to a strong\, progressive farm community? \nCome connect with like-minded farm workers in this welcoming space. \nWhen: February 9\, 2022 \n4 – 5:30 PST\n5 – 6:30 PM MST\, YST\n6 – 7:30 PM CST\n7 – 8:30 PM EST\n8 – 930 PM AST

SUMMARY:Terre de Liens - When Citizens Grow Farms
DESCRIPTION:  \n*le français suit \n\nFarmland Committee Speaker Series \n  \nPresented by: \nColine Sovran\, M.P.S.\, Advocacy Officer\, Terre de Liens \n  \n\nLearn how a social movement in France is ‘enabling citizens and peasants to take action on the ground’ through preserving farmland and facilitating access. \n\nAbout Terre de Liens: “[Terre de Liens is] a civic organization established to assist organic and peasant farmers in gaining access to land. The organization also promotes new ways to own and manage land as a common good. Terre de liens has created financial tools (a solidarity investment company and an endowment trust) to collect investment funds and donations\, and educational tools to inform the public and raise awareness about land access and agriculture. It now has a network of 2000 members and 8000 shareholders\, and owns 2400 hectares of farmland\, supporting about 200 farmers.” (Source: https://www.accesstoland.eu/-Terre-de-liens-) \n  \nThis session with guest speaker Coline from Terre de Liens is the first in a 2022 monthly workshop series put on by the NFU’s Farmland Committee. The goal of these sessions is to educate the membership and wider public on alternative land tenure possibilities\, as an initial step in a longer-term pursuit of implementing models to help address land access issues and implement food sovereignty. Join us on January 21st at 9am PST\, and stay tuned for our February session! After Coline’s presentation\, there will be plenty of time for a Q&A. The presentation will be in French\, with live translation into English. \n  \nJoin Us Online: \nFri. Jan. 21st\, 9:00 AM PST \n  \nPlease register here: \n https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMkc-ipqDktG9eO07O1KPwwiYoL90uV0Lpu \n  \nHosted by the Farmland Committee \nThis event was made possible with financial support from the Canada Research Chair program.

SUMMARY:NFUniversity – Fossil-fuel-free farming? Solar power\, electric tractors\, and the future.
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 8th\, 12:00 – 1:30 PM Pacific\nNFUniversity is inviting you to register for our class on Fossil-Fuel-Free-Farming presented on Thursday\, April 8\, 2021\, at noon Pacific / 1PM Mountain / 2PM Central / 3PM Eastern / 4PM Atlantic. \nOn-farm fuel use is a significant source of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.  But farmers are also leaders in decarbonization\, investing in solar panels and finding other ways to reduce fossil fuel use.  Now\, the first electric tractors are on the market\, and hydrogen powered equipment is on the horizon.  Join NFUniversity for a session on on-farm energy use\, emissions\, alternative energy\, low-emission farm equipment\, and the possibility of fossil fuel free farming.  For 99% of the time that humans have practiced agriculture\, it is been fossil fuel free.  How far in that direction can we go in the coming decade? \nDan Woynillowicz (energy and environmental policy analyst) and Tony Neale (farmer\, NFU member\, and electric tractor and solar array owner) will look at the current situation regarding energy use and emissions and look ahead\, to what’s possible. \n Bios \n Dan Woynillowicz is the Principal of Polaris Strategy + Insight\, a public policy advisory firm he launched in 2020.  An experienced researcher\, analyst and advocate\, he advises leading businesses and governments and is a regular public commentator on Canadian climate change and energy policy.  Drawing upon two decades of experience working at the interface of climate change policy and politics\, he offers unique insights into the energy transition and opportunities arising from climate solutions. \nTony Neale is the founder and farm manager of Wheelbarrow Farm\, where they grow 8 acres of mixed organic vegetables\, flowers\, fruits and nuts.  Since 2008\, Tony has been growing the business\, training the next generation of farmers and developing sustainable practices and technologies on the farm.  In 2018\, the Wheelbarrow Farm team decided to quickly transition away from fossil fuel inputs by installing solar power and purchasing a first-of-its-kind electric tractor.  In 2022 they will add an electric delivery vehicle to their fleet and by 2025 they plan on replacing all gas delivery vehicles with electric.
