SUMMARY:Free School 4 Farm Workers—Negotiation 101
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the kick-off of Free School 4 Farm Workers by joining us for this two-part online workshop where we take a deep dive into farm employment contracts and negotiation skills. This registration includes both sessions. The second session builds off of the first\, and we encourage you to attend both. \n\nEmployment Contracts 101: Tuesday\, February 13 4pm PT / 5pm MT / 6pm CT / 7pm ET / 8pm AT\nNegotiating 101: Tuesday\, February 20 4pm PT / 5pm MT / 6pm CT / 7pm ET / 8pm AT\n\nWe’ll open this series by exploring what qualifies as an employment contract and what purpose these documents can play in the farming landscape. Next\, we’ll consider common techniques you can use when negotiating – whether as part of a formal contract or for other benefits like a pay raise or a new title. Because negotiating often means putting yourself in a highly vulnerable position\, we will emphasize self-care and collective action within this discussion. In addition to assessing when it is appropriate and safe to negotiate\, we will discuss how to prepare for and recover from what may be an emotionally charged experience. Space for success stories and open discussion will center the worker experience. \nDuring both sessions\, we will be joined by experts in agricultural labor standards\, employment law\, worker-led organizing\, and coping strategies and self-care. Expertise spans both the U.S. and Canadian contexts. \n\nAlexia Kulwiec\, J.D.\, School for Workers. Alexia holds expertise in labor standards\, employment law\, and grievance arbitration within the U.S. agricultural context and is based in Wisconsin\, U.S.\nKevin Shimmin\, UFCW Canada. Kevin has been a union organizer with UFCW Canada for 20 years.\nSheila Ciminera\, LCSW\, CADS\, To Bear Witness Therapy. Sheila is a social worker based in New Mexico\, U.S.\, with more than 15 years of experience specializing in coping strategies\, anxiety\, racial identity\, and more. https://www.bearwitnesstherapy.com/\nKit Andres\, Migrant Workers Alliance for Change\n\nPlease note that Free School 4 Farm Workers sessions are for hired farm workers only. We define a farm worker as someone working on a farm they do not own\, for or without pay\, including interns\, apprentices\, and aspiring farm workers. If you have questions about whether you are eligible to participate\, please contact Anita Adalja at anita@notourfarm.org. Sessions will be recorded and shared with registrants. Simultaneous interpretation into both French and Spanish is available upon request. \nREGISTER HERE\nAbout FS4FW: Free School 4 Farm Workers is an international\, community-driven experiment in popular education by and for farm workers. SUMMARY:Social and Economic Impacts of Changing Land use and Land Tenure
DESCRIPTION:Companies and individuals are increasingly seeking to buy land in Scotland to benefit from its ‘offsetting’ potential\, while farmers and landowners are being asked to increase the positive environmental impact of land use. The Scottish government was concerned with the social and economic impacts on rural people of changes in land use and tenure\, so it commissioned research to measure current trends and guide policy on land reform\, net zero and other environmental goals\, natural capital governance\, and community engagement in decision-making. Naomi Beingessner’s presentation will provide examples of both small and large-scale change from Scotland and other Global North countries and assesses the perceived and actual impacts – both benefits and challenges – on rural communities\, businesses\, and land managers\, offering considerations for land use transitions and highlighting concerns regarding equity and social justice outcomes.

SUMMARY:Resisting land grabs for eucalyptus plantations in Brazil
DESCRIPTION:Resistência à grilagem de terras para plantações de eucalipto no Brasil\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us to hear from Quilombola community leaders in the Atlantic Forest biozone of Brazil who are fighting to grow food for their families and communities in direct resistance to the expansion of destructive eucalyptus tree plantations controlled by the major pulp company Suzano.  \n\n\n\nIndigenous territories and lands settled by Quilombola have been grabbed for eucalyptus tree plantations – and the expansion is not over. The industrial plantations of the largest pulp company in the world\, Brazilian company Suzano\, surround and cut off many small farming communities. They exhaust local water sources and expose people\, crops and farm animals to pesticide spray. Eucalyptus tree plantations have dried up streams\, rivers and even lakes in territories where land rights are disputed. The plantations replace native forest\, and support no animal life except for eucalyptus pollen that feeds bees.  \n\n\n\nThe Rural Landless Workers’ Movement (MST) is taking back plantation land and transforming it into agroecological and agroforestry farming. They argue the land can be productive for farming and people instead of pulp production and Suzano. Quilombola communities are fighting for legal recognition of their lands as Suzano continues to encroach on local farms and traditional community lands. \n\n\n\nLucy Sharratt and Kaitlyn Duthie-Kannikkatt of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) met with these leaders during community visits in Brazil as part of an international delegation to exchange information on genetically engineered trees and industrial plantations in May 2023.  \n\n\n\nBackground: The pulp company Suzano says it owns 1.4 million hectares of eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. This includes Indigenous territories\, and lands settled by Quilombola and peasant peoples and communities. Suzano’s eucalyptus plantations are responsible for serious social\, environmental and climate harm\, including deforestation\, pollution\, water shortages\, and destruction of fertile lands. In the state of Espírito Santo\, families of the Rural Landless Workers’ Movement (MST) produce more than 100 tonnes of food per year on land that they have taken back from Suzano’s eucalyptus. Nobody eats eucalyptus\, and more than 33 million families go hungry in Brazil. If Suzano’s 1.4 million hectares of plantations were used for land reform\, it would be enough to ensure the survival of more than 115\,000 families. – excerpted from “What you should know about Suzano Papel e Celulose”\, World Rainforest Movement\, 2023. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCélio Pinheiro Leocádio is a Quilombola\, born in the Quilombo of Volta Miúda\, in Caravelas in the far south of Bahia state\, in the north-east of Brazil. SUMMARY:BIPOC Workshop: Prairies
DESCRIPTION:The National Farmers Union (NFU) BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous and People of Colour) Caucus is hosting a series of in-person farmer-led events coast to coast to coast! We are inviting current and aspiring BIPOC farmers and farm workers together to connect\, learn\, and organize together. \nThe NFU BIPOC Caucus has identified access to technical training as a barrier to entering farming\, especially led by BIPOC producers. We also have a desire and a need to connect with and unite alongside BIPOC producers. In union\, we are strong – and at the core of collective work\, is relationships. We are so thrilled to offer financially-supported opportunities to bring BIPOC farmers and farm workers together to build relationships and learn. Aspiring BIPOC farmers / farm workers / adjacent food workers welcome! \nJoin us for our prairie gathering!
