SUMMARY:Have your say on the Right to Repair in Canada -How to participate in the federal consultation
DESCRIPTION:Innovation\, Science and Economics Development Canada is conducting a consultation through a questionnaire regarding the right to repair until September 26th\, 2024.   \n\n\n\nJoin the NFU on Thursday September 19\, 2024 at 2:30 PM PDT/3:30 PM CST/4:30 PM CDT/5:30 PM EDT/6:30 PM ADT for a webinar regarding the “Right to Repair” consultation. The webinar will discuss the current framing of the Right to Repair and take you through the questionnaire. The Zoom link can be found below.  \n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting: https://nfu-ca.zoom.us/j/88269759500?pwd=2iqbhbledEs3gUetSb0xqudvFy87vj.1 \n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 882 6975 9500 \n\n\n\nPasscode: 787081 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout\n\n\n\nClick here for the questionnaire. \n\n\n\nThe right to repair goes beyond the ability for consumers to repair electronics\, appliances\, and machinery. The right to repair is about independence and freedom from major manufacturers in order to have access to timely and inexpensive repairs\, as well as operability between products that suit the needs of consumers and farm businesses. It is also about affordability and sustainability – repairability and durability of products ensure that Canadians do not have to re-buy products that were intentionally designed to be replaced with newer products – also known as planned obsolescence.  \n\n\n\nFor farmers\, the right to repair is becoming increasingly important as the farm machinery sector continues to consolidate. \n\n\n\nFor small-scale farmers and direct-to-consumer sellers\, household appliances are important for the processing and storage of farm products.  \n\n\n\nThis right to repair consultation focuses on consumer appliances and electronics\, but it is also important for farmers to get a consistent and strong right to repair regime. Right to repair must extend to everything from cellphones and household appliances to tractors and seed drills.

SUMMARY:NFU Region 6 Meet-up and Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Join NFU Region 6 (SK) annual summer picnic and meet-up. This year we are gathering at Prairie Garden Seeds\, the farm of daughter-father duo and long-time NFU members\, Rachelle and Jim Ternier. It is located near Cochin\, SK\, on the edge of the beautiful Murray Lake (detailed directions below).  \n\n\n\nWe will kick off the day at 12 noon with a potluck lunch. Please bring food to share\, as well as drinks\, dishes\, cups\, cutlery and any other eating utensils you may need. Note: This is an off-grid farm so refrigeration and running water will not be available. Bring ample drinking water and plan to clean your dishes when you get home if possible. We will gather to eat in a small quonset (semi-outdoors)\, equipped with tables and chairs. There will be outhouses and hand sanitizer available for use. \n\n\n\nLunch will be followed by a group discussion\, a farm tour\, and free time. Bring your bathing suit and towels if you wish to swim or bask on the beach (weather-permitting) and your work clothes and gloves if you’re game to help out with a simple work task\, such as weeding. Sun-screen and bug-spray are also recommended.  \n\n\n\nPlease do not bring your pets\, but know that this is the home of a very sweet and friendly mid-sized dog named Coco!    \n\n\n\nFolks are welcome to bring a trailer or a tent and camp overnight on the farm. There are also camping and hotel options nearby at Battlefords Provincial Park and in North Battleford.   \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions or would like to inquire about carpooling opportunities\, email Julie at members@nfu.ca.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen approaching Cochin from the South… Immediately BEFORE crossing the bridge take your first RIGHT turn. Follow this small road that goes east with the red-roofed buildings on your left. There are three speed bumps and the road gets rough after that and turns to gravel. You will cross a small bridge over the creek (the creek connects both lakes and runs through Cochin)\, after which the road goes uphill.Once up the hill\, you may see a large sign on your right saying ‘Welcome to Moosomin First Nation’. Turn right/south into the centre of the reserve. On your left will eventually be the Band Office\, an admin building\, and a hall\, on your right eventually is the school and the hockey arena. Follow the curve in the road by the arena and the community hall – you are now driving east between these two buildings and the road goes slightly uphill where you will see a row of houses to your right and then the road goes downhill- GO DOWN THIS HILL.At the bottom of the hill the road goes straight OR curves right; TAKE THE CURVE RIGHT and keep following the gravel road through the bush. At the end of this windy road through the bush\, the road continues with a sharp left turn – (going straight would be crossing a texas gate and entering a farm where they have a no trespassing sign) – take the sharp left turn and follow this road\, you will notice that the road is now very straight and you are now on Hillside Road (sometimes there is a sign that says this\, sometimes it’s knocked down!). A little over 500 meters past this sharp turn left is your first option of a road to the right; turn right and cross the bright red Texas gate. Drive straight on this road for about 2 ½ km\, this is the road that leads directly to our place! My house is the one with the blue metal roof on the hillside facing south overlooking the lake. Drive all the way down the hill and turn right at the bottom of the hill towards the Quonset buildings. Park around the Quonset buildings and then follow signs.Donate to the NFU

SUMMARY:Health and Safety on the Farm - Heat Stress\, Climate Hazards Webinar with OHCOW
DESCRIPTION:With summer underway\, farmers and farm workers are already facing the heat. Exposure to high temperatures poses a serious hazard for those of us who work outdoors. Heat related illness can be serious in the immediate and longer term. \n\n\n\nFor many of us\, climate change has also meant learning to safely navigate wildfire smoke and extreme storms\, in addition to the risks of heat stress. While we can’t “weatherproof” our farms\, there are a number of measures we and our teams can take to keep safe this summer. Featuring Occupational Hygienist John Oudyk from OHCOW (Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers)\, the webinar will cover: \n\n\n\n\nrisk factors to watch out for\n\n\n\nheat stress prevention on the farm\, and \n\n\n\nhow to recognise and address signs of heat-related illness.\n\n\n\n\nThere will be opportunities to ask questions\, learn practical ways to implement best practices\, and share your experience and expertise trying to keep safe in the climate crisis.  \n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, July 2 \n\n\n\nTime: 4pm PDT / 5pm AB+SK / 6pm MB / 7pm EDT / 8pm ADT \n\n\n\nWho: Farm operators\, farm employers\, and farm workers from across the country \n\n\n\nWhere: online

Resolutions that have been passed at the regional level come forward to the national Convention.  \nAll members in good standing residing in the region may submit and vote on resolutions.  \nDebate at both regional and national conventions is done according to the rules of order published in Parliamentary Procedure at a Glance\, New Edition by O. Garfield Jones. The goal is to have as many policy resolutions as possible heard and thoroughly debated with the least amount of time wasted.

SUMMARY:Agroecology: Scaling up!
DESCRIPTION:Agroecology seeks to emulate nature in agro-ecosystems. It works in concert with natural flows and cycles and embraces diversity. It has been shown to enhance food production in small scale farming systems with low inputs and in the midst of climatic variability. But what does agroecology look like when scaled up to encompass diversified large crop fields and pastures?  What does it look like when practiced in drier places?  Does it imply or require larger social and economic shifts?  Join us as we delve into how to think of agroecology on a larger scale.

SUMMARY:Colonial Roots of Modern Free Trade Agreements
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the colonial origins of modern international trade. Since the 1990s\, the World Trade Organization\, bilateral investment treaties\, and free trade agreements have governed the international trade and investment regime based on free market ideology\, but geopolitics\, power relations\, and corporate interests have shaped trade rules for over 500 years before they reached their current form. \n\n\n\nThe development of international trade and mercantilism at the dawn of colonialism resulted from an alliance between colonial states and companies that allowed them to shape international trade and investment rules until most states gained their independence after World War II. Today’s free trade practices reflect their colonial legacy\, as the center of the global economy continues to dictate and shape activity in the periphery according to its own interests. A sound assessment of the nature of these trade and investment agreements is essential to addressing the problems they create. \n\n\n\nAdditional resource and background: “How colonialism shaped free trade agreements” by Nicolas Roux.
