SUMMARY:Food Price Inflation and Farmer Livelihood
DESCRIPTION:Canadian farmers have seen no benefit from rising grocery store prices since 2020. Instead\, they are being squeezed by corporate profiteering on all sides. For years\, corporate concentration in Canada’s food system has kept farm gate prices chronically low\, while retail prices rise steadily for consumers. Farmers are forced to accept prices that are decided by large\, multinational commodity traders and processors. At the same time\, they face prohibitively high costs for inputs from oligopolistic suppliers. The system is stacked against farmers and consumers alike. It’s time to confront corporate power in the food system.\n\nJoin the NFU on May 22nd at 3PM EST for a panel webinar on the farmers’ share of food prices and an examination of how corporate concentration in the Canadian food system harms both farmers and consumers featuring Keldon Bester of the Canadian Anti-Monopoly Project; Alex Purdye former Broadbent Institute Fellow; and Alyssa Gerhardt\, PhD student at Dalhousie University.

SUMMARY:Advance Payments Program
DESCRIPTION:The Advance Payments Program is a federal loan guarantee program which provides agricultural producers with easy access to low-cost cash advances.\n\nUnder the program\, you can access up to $1\,000\,000 in total advances based on the value of the eligible agricultural products you will produce or that you have in storage. The Government of Canada pays the interest on the first $100\,000 of your advance (the first $250\,000 for 2024 and 2025). You repay your advance as you sell the agricultural products\, with up to 18 months to fully repay the advance for most commodities (up to 24 months for cattle and bison).\n\nAPP advances can provide you with cash flow to meet your financial needs until you are able to sell your agricultural products. The program can provide marketing flexibility by allowing you to sell your agricultural products based on market conditions rather than the need for cash.\n\nAPP advances are available through 26 participating producer organizations\, that is\, APP Administrators\, across Canada.

SUMMARY:Free School for Farmworkers: Athletes In Overalls - Movement Health & Injury Prevention
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who has farmed for a day\, a week\, a month\, or a full season knows that farming is a MARATHON (maybe a series of marathons!)\, and not a sprint. When we look at farmwork through the lens of sport and athleticism\, what changes for us? How does that impact our diet\, our noticing in our bodies\, our sleep hygiene\, and our confidence in how we advocate for ourselves? \n\n\n\nAt the next Free School session\, longtime farmer and farmworker\, strength athlete\, and personal trainer Cynthia Flores of Labor-Movement will discuss movement health and wellness for farmworkers from an athletic perspective. Cynthia asks: What does it mean to be a farmworker and an athlete? What is movement self-advocacy? \n\n\n\nYou can expect to learn tips on managing food\, fluid\, sleep\, and stress for best performance over long days and the season. The discussion will focus on safe lifts using hinges and squats\, reducing the potential of low back pain or injury\, and moving and carrying loads. \n\n\n\nThere will be time for Q&A and discussion so bring your questions and experiences! \n\n\n\nJoin us Tuesday\, January 28\, at 3:30 pm PT/6:30 pm ET on Zoom. This session will not be recorded. \n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE \n\n\n\nFacilitator bio: Cynthia Flores\, owner and founder of Labor-Movement LLC\, owned and operated a vegetable production for 20 years in western Maine\, and turkey farmed for 12 holiday seasons. She has been a strength athlete for 12 years\, and is a Certified Personal Trainer and Licensed Massage Therapist. Founded in 2020\, Labor-Movement works with farmers and farmworkers in body mechanics and movement pattern training\, with a goal of preventing injuries and extending career longevity. In 2024\, Cynthia worked with over 900 farmers in 18 states and British Columbia. \n\n\n\nAccessibility information: This session will be facilitated in English and simultaneously interpreted into Spanish by Cooperativa Brujúlas. Closed captioning will also be available. \n\n\n\nCo-hosted by Not Our Farm\, UW-Extension\, and FairShare CSA Coalition. \n\n\n\nPlease note that Free School for Farmworkers sessions are a farmworker-only space. \n\n\n\n*We define a farmworker as someone working on a farm they do not own\, for or without pay\, including interns\, apprentices\, cooperative workers\, and aspiring farmworkers. SUMMARY:Part 4: Financial Barriers to Climate Action Implementation
DESCRIPTION:Financing is one of the most common challenges local governments face when looking to put their climate plans into action. Municipal governments are limited in the tools available to them to raise revenue\, being largely dependent on property taxes\, user fees\, and funding from other levels of government. Though climate mitigation and adaptation will ultimately result in cost-savings for governments and residents alike\, many projects require significant initial investment\, which can be a deterrent for cash-strapped municipalities. \nHowever\, municipalities are also creating new and innovative solutions\, creating taxation structures\, working with new partners\, and tapping into new sources of revenue. This webinar will feature a discussion of the range of different climate financing options available to municipalities\, as well as a case study of one community’s successful approach to financing climate action.

SUMMARY:Part 3: Institutional and Political Barriers to Climate Action Implementation
DESCRIPTION:When it’s time to start implementing local climate plans\, a set of challnges often arise that are political and institutional in nature. Municipal governments often come up against established procedures and resistance to change that can slow down the adoption of new climate policies and practices. At the same time\, implementing climate plans effectively often requires deep levels of coordination and collaboration across municipal departments and agencies and with other local actors in the community\, yet this type of coordinate can be challenging to achieve. Within municipalities\, it can also be complex and time-consuming to achieve policy integration\, incorporating climate objectives into existing plans and policies. Finally\, communities do not exist in isolation; rather\, they must operate within the broader landscape of provincial/territorial and federal governments whose support for climate action can vary greatly. Future proofing climate action is thus essential in guarding against shifting politics. \nThis webinar will dive into some of these barriers and explore how they can be overcome.
