The National Farmers Union Youth Campaign for New Farmers is a broad-based, national campaign designed to create awareness around the alarming decrease in Canada’s farm population, particularly those under the age of 35, and the consequences this decrease has on all aspects of society.  Its structure includes three areas:

  • Policy analysis and development
  • Partnership building and communications and
  • Educational Programming

Why do we need this campaign?

Statistics Canada figures reveal that between 1991 and 2006, Canada lost over 60% of its farmers under the age of 35.

Many Canadians are still unaware of the political and social barriers facing our farmers today.

Every family farm lost in Canada represents generations of lost knowledge that cannot be replaced with new technology.

Farming needs to be a dignified and economically viable career choice for young Canadians.

How can you get involved?

Become a member of the NFU. If you are not actively farming, you can become an associate member.

Find out about policies and practices in your area that are working for or against new farmers.

Bring it to the attention of municiple, provincial or federal governments by letter writing or other means.

Participate in public forums on food and farming in your area. Are the people around you aware?

Publicise your findings - if you're a journalist, broadcaster or film maker, you can make specific reports highlighting these issues.

Build coalitions to strenthen the campaign. Encourage partners to become active. Share information and successful strategies.

Contact us and share your initiatives, experiences and successes!
