NFU ASKS FARMERS TO CONTACT PRIME MINISTER

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask.--"After touring some of the drought affected areas yesterday with Mr. Vanclief, I am convinced that there are at least two things that affected farmers can do to help themselves. First of all, affected farmers should contact our Prime Minister directly to make sure that he is also kept informed of the situation," said Stewart Wells, NFU Board member from Saskatchewan.

"As a result of yesterday's tour by Mr. Vanclief, I am asking all farmers affected by the drought to carefully document the situation on their farm, send a copy to the Prime Minister, and also send a copy to the National Farmers Union office in Saskatoon. In this way, the NFU can make doubly sure that their stories are heard by the Prime Minister and all other cabinet ministers," continued Wells.

"It will be important that farmers don't underestimate the problems they are facing, but it is also important not to exaggerate. The picture that we will place in front of the Prime Minister needs to be accurate," added Wells.

"Secondly, Mr. Vanclief's trip to farmers' fields in Saskatchewan is a good first step, but a concerted effort by the affected farmers will be needed over the next several months if we are to soften the blow of the drought. In this respect, I would also urge farmers to make sure they belong to a farm organization that will represent their interests. I think that all of the farmers on the trip yesterday with Mr. Vanclief did some good work, but we also need the support of farmers to be effective," concluded Wells.
