farmers union"Prarie farmers are losing their shirts to costly Ottawa-driven policy changes," says Shannon Storey, Women's President of the National Farmers Union. "Farmers who attend the rally will be able to make this point by putting the shirts their losing into boxes that will end up in Paul Martin's office."
On Tuesday, NFU President Cory Ollikka mailed his own shirt to Martin at a well-attended press conference.
Storey says, "Every Saskatchewan resident is already paying $299 to support farmers who in turn are supporting the whole country with jobs and cheap food. Farmers in provinces which are receiving decent support do need and deserve the support they're getting, but so do we on the praries - and the need here is greater, and the average taxpayer's income here is lower. Ottawa brought on our problems, and Mr.Martin has 5.5 billion dollars that could get us over the hump this year. He is willing to distribute this money through tax benefits which will do a lot for the rich and little or nothing for the poor. Canadians should be outraged.
"We are losing our shirts because of Ottawa, so Mr.Martin might as well get them in person. It's a message that he may not be able to ignore.
Although the NFU was not involved in organizing the farm rally which was held on Saturday in Saskatoon at Saskatchewan Place, member Morris Prescesky will be collecting shirts from an NFU booth with agreement from rally organizers. Farmers will also be able to pick up the latest information on the costs of federal program cuts to Saskatchewan farmers and taxpayers at the NFU booth.
Farmers and other concerned taxpayers unable to bring their shirts to the rally can mail them to this address:
