Dear Minister McMeekin:

Op Ed: Proudly Canadian: Viable, Modern Dairy Sector

by Randall Affleck, NFU Board Member

I am proud of Canada’s national agriculture policy for dairy; supply management. Like many rural initiatives of the past, it has deep cooperative roots that have nurtured the development of a viable, modern dairy sector in every region of Canada.

Major Disaster Unfolding

Beachburg, ON – Dave Mackay, President of the Renfrew County National Farmers Union, reports the present drought situation is serious and almost to the point of becoming critical for area farmers. Farmers had already expressed concern two weeks ago, however the situation has escalated to very critical during the last week with no relief in the long range weather forecast. It appears the areas most affected are Renfrew County and including Lanark, Hastings and Ottawa Carleton Counties.

The NFU Rejects Completely Martha Hall-Findlay’s Anti-Supply Management Report

Ottawa: “Former Liberal leadership candidate Martha Hall-Findlay has made public both her opposition to, and her lack of understanding of Canada’s supply management system for dairy in the report she presented in a press conference yesterday,” said Paul Slomp, National Farmers Union(NFU) Youth Vice President. “Her report is full of misinformation, skewed statistics, contradictions, and reprehensible arguments calling to eliminate supply management in order to gain points in behind-closed-doors international trade negotiations.”

NFU Disappointed in Appeal Court’s Decision on Introduction of Bill C-18

The National Farmers Union is extremely disappointed in the Federal Court of Appeal’s decision to strike down Justice Campbell’s December 7, 2011 ruling where he found that Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz had acted outside of the rule of law by bringing forward legislation that destroyed the Canadian Wheat Board’s single desk without first conducting a farmer vote.

NFU in NB encourages citizens to support the plight of the farmer, locally and globally.

From June 20-22, 2012, governments from all over the world will meet in Río de Janeiro, Brazil, to commemorate 20 years since the “Earth Summit”, the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development, which established for the first time a global agenda for “sustainable development”.  Meanwhile, 20 years after this momentous summit, we continue to see many of the real causes of environmental, economic, and social deterioration go on without abatement.

The Great Food Robbery How Corporations Control Food, Grab Land and Destroy the Climate

The global food system is in profound crisis. More than a billion people suffer from hunger, and their numbers are rising faster than the global population. Yet more than enough food is produced to feed everybody in the world. At the same time we are heading deeper into a global climate crisis, for which the industrial food system is to a large extent to blame. Meanwhile corporations are grabbing huge areas of land and water systems in poor countries, and displacing rural communities.
