NFU Calls for changes to Growing Forward 2 Safety Net Programs

(Saskatoon)– The National Farmers Union (NFU) calls on federal and provincial agriculture ministers to improve Business Risk Management (BRM) programs under Growing Forward 2 by ensuring needed money will be directed to family farms instead of being used to help the biggest corporate farms grow even larger.

The following brief outlines the National Farmers Union analysis of the suite of Business Risk Management programs, also known as agriculture safety net programs, being negotiated under the Growing Forward 2 federal-provincial policy framework, and makes recommendations to make these programs work better for family farmers.

National Farmers Union Members Oppose Closure of Federal Research Facility

Bouctouche, N.B.-The National Farmers Union spoke out clearly at the NFU Region 1 Convention on August 7 against the closure of the Hervé J. Michaud Experimental Farm in Bouctouche.  Members attending from the three Maritime Provinces were unanimous in passing a resolution to maintain the research facility and all other federal experimental farms currently slated for closure under federal cost-cutting measures. NFU Announces 2012 Scholarship Winners at Regional Convention

Bouctouche, N.B. Farmers from the three Maritime provinces gathered at the Duneview Inn/L’Auberge Vue de la Dune in Bouctouche, NB, on Tuesday, August 7, for the National Farmers Union (NFU) Region 1 Convention.  This year’s theme was “Diversifying the Farm: Value-adding in the Local Marketplace” and discussions throughout the day focused on the various opportunities for fostering a sustainable Maritime farm-base in an ever-changing marketplace.
