Bill C-32, the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, is a major and controversial piece of legislation. Many charge that MPs gutted the Bill when, bowing to industry pressure, they removed sections previously added by a Commons Committee that would have:

• Guaranteed the phase out of Canada's most harmful pollutants;
• Ensured that genetically-engineered products are thoroughly tested; and
• Required the government to follow a "precautionary principle" on environmental matters.

In an August 26^th, 1999 news release, NFU Region 3 (Ontario) Coordinator Peter Dowling criticized the government for pushing Bill C-32 through the House and Senate before the NFU and other groups have a chance to formally comment on the Bill and its contents.

The NFU has worked for 30 years for policies and legislation which protects the environment and which sustains agricultural lands for future generations. The NFU has promoted measures to protect streams, control soil erosion, and find alternatives to agricultural chemicals.
