Farm Women
June 13, 2001

REGINA -- A new report suggests women are holding farm families together during times of crisis -- often by taking other jobs in addition to their regular farm and household chores.

University of Regina researchers surveyed over 700 farm women around Saskatchewan over a two-year period.

They found that women play a major role in the economy of family farms.

About 40 per cent work more than 13 hours a day.

They do 80 per cent of household work, 75 per cent of the bookkeeping, 21 per cent of the field operations and 17 per cent of equipment repairs.

Fifty-four per cent of respondents were involved in off-farm work and only 25 per cent felt the farm operation could continue as it is without that off-farm income.

The report also found the women are keeping their communities together through their volunteer work.

When asked what issues farm women had to deal with, about two-thirds reported financial problems and one-half said a lack of time.

About 55 per cent found their lives somewhat stressful but 74 per cent rated their health as good to very good.

A majority said they were happy and interested in life.
