NFU WILL SUPPORT GM CANOLA AND WHEAT SUIT
SASKATOON, Sask.--The National Farmers Union stated today that it supports the lawsuit planned by the Saskatchewan Organic Directorate (SOD). SOD announced on October 12 that it will organize a class-action suit on behalf of organic farmers to seek compensation for losses resulting from the introduction of genetically-modified (GM) canola, and to seek an injunction against the introduction of GM wheat.
"Since 1998, the NFU has been urging the federal and provincial governments to determine who is liable for genetic pollution and the significant costs that GM technologies impose on organic farmers and conventional farmers who choose to farm GM-free. The SOD lawsuit is an important step in determining that liability," said NFU Board member and organic farmer Stewart Wells.
"Mass contamination following the introduction of GM canola means that organic farmers now find it nearly impossible to grow organic, GM-free canola. The introduction of GM wheat--and the GM oats, barley, and flax likely to follow--will make organic farming much more difficult, risky, and costly," said Wells.
NFU member and organic farmer Ian Cushon stated: "Wheat is an important part of the rotation on my organic farm. If GM wheat is introduced and if it contaminates my farm, it could cost me up to $50,000 per year in lost organic premiums."
Cushon noted that conventional farmers will also face costs: "Monsanto cannot control its GM Roundup Ready Canola. GM canola has become a herbicide resistant 'superweed' on many farms, making weed control more difficult and costly. The introduction of herbicide resistant GM wheat and other crops will compound this agronomic problem for all farmers. Many farmers, organic and conventional alike, don't want runaway GM plants on their land," he said.
The NFU will offer all assistance possible to the SOD, including fund-raising assistance.
