“Hi, I really need to talk to a top official!  My neighbor has planted the new genetically modified (GM) alfalfa crop next door.  I’ve been saving alfalfa seed for the past 30 years now, a non-GM variety, and I’m afraid to go on.”

There is an exciting new initiative happening across Canada right now! It’s called The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security. All across Canada, there are Regional Seed Coordinators helping farmers increase their seed security through on-the-ground projects, trials, and funding opportunities. Call to Action from the National Farmers Union

La Via Campesina has declared April 17, 2014 to be the International Day of Farmer and Peasant Struggles in Defence of Farmers' and Peasants' Seeds. In solidarity with farmers and peasants around the world, the National Farmers Union (NFU) is calling on all Canadians to join us as we call for a new Seed Act for Farmers. A Seed Act for Farmers would recognize the inherent rights of farmers – derived from thousands of years of custom and tradition – to save, reuse, select, exchange and sell seeds.

National Farmers Union Youth launch new video series

NFU Media Release:

Today the National Farmers Union Youth launched a video series that addresses major concerns with the proposed changes to Canada’s Plant Breeders’ Rights Act included in the omnibus agriculture bill, The Agricultural Growth Act (Bill C-18), which is currently before Parliament.

“The three short videos highlight key mechanisms in Bill C-18 that increase the power and control of large breeders and severely restrict farmers’ autonomy and Canadian food sovereignty,” explained BC farmer and NFU Youth President, Alex Fletcher. ”These videos feature fellow NFU farmers and seed experts speaking from the heart, from experience and from their extensive knowledge about this issue.”
