Walking Out on the Commons

On Thursday December 18th I was given the honour of representing the NFU at the Ontario Pollinator Health Plan’s Agricultural Stakeholders meeting.  Unlike the other scheduled meetings, three in-person and the two online, this one was specifically for farmers and the agricultural industry.  The Ontario government was seeking specific information about how to implement their strategy to reduce neonicotinoid (NNI) pesticides by 80% in a way that would work for farmers across the province.  What transpired at this meeting has left me feeling angry, disappointed and firmly committed to the values and analysis of the NFU.

There is an exciting new initiative happening across Canada right now! It’s called The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security. All across Canada, there are Regional Seed Coordinators helping farmers increase their seed security through on-the-ground projects, trials, and funding opportunities. The Regional Seed Coordinator in Atlantic Canada is Steph Hughes. I thought it would be fun to interview Steph to learn more about the Bauta Initiative.

The CAPÉ: Cooperating for Local and Ecological Agriculture in Québec

Youth participants in one of several presentations delivered at the 2013 CAPÉ fall meetingIt was like summer camp for farmers, except it felt like winter and the food was better.

The big barn-style building was jam-packed with about a hundred farmers, most of them in their early thirties or younger, absorbed in an in-depth workshop on greenhouse production of tomatoes and cucumbers. The previous day, an afternoon tour of a local farm had led to a massive potluck dinner and a late night brainstorming session on preferred vegetable varieties.

This was my first CAPÉ annual fall meeting, and I can assure you it will not be the last.
