A weekend with the NFU youth

Posted by Alex Fletcher on June 14, 2014

By Dan Kretschmar.

Spending four days at the NFU youth gathering in beautiful Nanoose Bay, Vancouver Island has cemented in my mind that returning to the farm was the right decision for me to make. It is difficult to find words to express my amazement at the brilliance of each one of the NFU youth from all over Canada. I truly feel that there is hope for the future, and I am honoured to be involved with such an inspirational group of people.

On April 17, join us as we call for a Seed Act for Farmers

Call to Action from the National Farmers Union

La Via Campesina has declared April 17, 2014 to be the International Day of Farmer and Peasant Struggles in Defence of Farmers' and Peasants' Seeds. In solidarity with farmers and peasants around the world, the National Farmers Union (NFU) is calling on all Canadians to join us as we call for a new Seed Act for Farmers. A Seed Act for Farmers would recognize the inherent rights of farmers – derived from thousands of years of custom and tradition – to save, reuse, select, exchange and sell seeds.

The CAPÉ: Cooperating for Local and Ecological Agriculture in Québec

Posted by Virginie Lavallee-Picard on April 1, 2014

Youth participants in one of several presentations delivered at the 2013 CAPÉ fall meetingIt was like summer camp for farmers, except it felt like winter and the food was better.

The big barn-style building was jam-packed with about a hundred farmers, most of them in their early thirties or younger, absorbed in an in-depth workshop on greenhouse production of tomatoes and cucumbers. The previous day, an afternoon tour of a local farm had led to a massive potluck dinner and a late night brainstorming session on preferred vegetable varieties.

This was my first CAPÉ annual fall meeting, and I can assure you it will not be the last.

Launching the NFU Blog!

Posted by Cammie Harbottle on March 31, 2014

NFU Youth and friends, Tatamagouche 2013Welcome to the National Farmers Union blog! This blog was born out of the passionate discussions and dialogue that took place at the 2013 NFU youth retreat in Tatamagouche, NS. We want to increase visibility and outreach to potential members and provide current members with more opportunities to connect, share and participate in wider discussions. As well, this space will make relevant and important NFU issues more accessible to a wider audience.

We hope that this blog becomes the go-to place for farmers and allies across the country to talk about farming, farmers and food. Stay tuned...we look forward to hearing your thoughts, stories, and voices!
